Input for my first grow box??

I'm designing a couple grow boxes for me and a friend. Here's what my research has led me to, but would really like some advice...I'll post pics when I get the thing going...Thanks folks!!

I'm going to make a box 36w" x 24"d x 42" h and run a 150w hps...Is this the right specs for this light??

I'm going to grow with a 2' x 2' scrog about 12" from the base of my plants.

I want to grow 4 different strains each in a 1'x1' area of the scrog.

My light will be 18" above the screen..

Doing my veg on left, so' it'll be divided, that's why the extra ft in width.

Ventilation is kind of a mystery to me. should I cut holes and use PVC elbows?? Seems like that would let alot of smell go? Also, do 150w HPS lights have an exhaust and which ones? How do I run a carbon filter to it if it does?

One last Q for now.... using dirt and a scrog, is it reasonable to expect 3 oz ( 81g) from this setup??? Thanks for any advice!!

Hey kmanis!

Your box size is more than ideal for a 150, with a 2x2 area for it. Infact, some people would say its a bit on the large side. I'm actually considering running two 150w lights in a similar space.

4 plants in a 2x2' area works well. The amount of light for the area might be a bit on the low side, but it will by all means work.

Smell wont escape from the box, even if it has holes in it, as long as there is an active exhaust. Air will constantly be drawn in through the holes to replace the air the exhaust sucks out, preventing odors from creeping out.

The Mini Floralux 150w HPS has an air cooled outlet that lets you connect a duct to it. It doesn't have an inlet, so the air coming in will come from the box. This makes it difficult to set up a carbon filter because you usually want to suck air through it, not push it out (but it is stil very possible to do). You can also make your own 150 watt cool tube (check out the link in my signature at the end of my post).

I think a 3 ounce yield in such a setup is very realistic.

Love the tutorial on the cool tube!! Think I'm going with the Mini Floralux, great call!! Will I need to have cooling fans or will the air pulled in from the exhaust on the light have enough circulation to keep the veg and flower room cool?? I'm running PVC from underneath on flower room and underneath on veg room and through wall to flower room...Thanks again!!

i will agree with lemon that 3 oz is very realistic from such a set-up ... HOWEVER (i assume this is your first grow) , there is much that can go wrong and it's not unheard of for a rookie to get only a couple of grams (or less) from the first grow. think of it as a learning experience, and any ganja that comes from it is a bonus.

having the light 18" away from the screen is fine at the seedling stage, but you will want to be able to move it MUCH closer as the plants get stronger.

your exhaust IS your cooling fan, any other fans in the cabinet are not cooling, they are just moving warm air around. it does help to have a small fan in there, however, because the breeze strengthens the stems of young plants . you can get rid of it later as the cabinet fills up with green.

happy growing, it's a fine hobby.
