Inline fans - noise reduction?

I wonder how much noise reduction it will be if I decrease
the speed (rpm) of an inline fan with a speed controller.
Examples:

- Pax125M has a capasity of 214m3/h. Noise is given as 38dB.

- Pax160M has a capasity of 450m3/h. Noise is given as 43dB.

Let us say that I need air exhaust of 140m3/h to keep the temp down.

Pax125M needs to run at 65% of its capasity.
Pax160M needs to run at 31% of its capasity.

Which one do you think will make less noise?`

The point is that I cant have any noise reach my neighbours upstairs,
so I need a qiuet system. Plus if I have some girls over, it would be
nice if they didnt hear too much buzzing from the closet, which is a
seperated room in my hallway.
I will grow with a 250w hps.

Hope you understand, english aint my first language.

There will be significantly less noise, but you'll still be able to hear it in your room. If you line your closet with thick carpeting or hang thick blankets, it will do alot to help keep the noise down. But this means you wont be able to paint the room white because of the blankets, but you can hang poly of mylar(or reflectix).

I would think with a 250hps you could run the lower of the two. I assume you are only exhausting (hopefully into a scrubber for smell) so the noise should be minimal.

The other thing is how you mount the fan. Make sure it's not near anything that would vibrate or clatter.

Next, depending on your system ya might have air pumps going. If quieter the better, switch to soil. No worries on water temp or noise from additional pumps, etc.

Lastly - for that SERIOUS sound proofing.... pick up some foam cone sound insulating stuff. Usually can snag it from electronic/sound stores. Line your walls with this foam then tack on Mylar. Reflects AND dampens noise.

My grow hasnt started yet, Im just checking out what equipment I
need.
I will grow "Sheherazade" from Paradise Seeds, I have bought 10
feminised seeds, so I will go for a Scrog grow in soil.
For the vegetative periode I will use a 200w envirolite, 6400k.
The closet which stands in a small room, will have passive air intake
and Pc fans for air circulation.
So the only problem Im facing at the moment is the exhaust from the
closet. It need to be quiet, but powerful enough to cool down the
closet and be used with a scrubber. Im not sure how much Sheherazade
smells (2 plants), but I will not take any chances.
And the room where the closet stands only have a passive air intake up on
the wall. But I think enough air will get in/out from that hole (1'x1').

Big fan, slow speed = low noise

Small fan, high speed = high noise

Same flow rate.

Use large ducts also;

I have an elicent<--sp? 6" that is friggen SILENT compared to my 6" eco?? blue fan.
So, certain brands are ALOT quieter than others..

good luck

A duct muffler also helps a bit in reducing the amount of noise. I purchased mine, a 6" model, for around $65 to the door. You can build one quite easily for less than half of that cost. Only problem is I had no idea how a duct muffler was constructed or how it worked, prior to purchasing one. Now that I know, I won't buy another... but I will always run with a muffler as long as I'm growing with shared walls.

This is true. I heard Can-Fan's are a bit on the loud side, too. I've only used a Vortex, but my understanding is that Vortex and Elicent inline centrifugal fans are the quietest, most well-balanced fans available on the market.

I can offer insight into the ecoplus line, your better off pissing on your money and then lighting it on fire. Youd have more fun doing that than wasting it on an ecoplus fan. I bought the 4 inch and a speed controller...no dice, the lower i turned it down the worse the vibrations got, and to top it off, after a few hours trying to find the "magical" spot, where the fan didnt run too high and be waaaay to noisy, and the low spot, where it hummed like a diesel......i finally found a decent quiet range, only problem....

the damn thing would pitch up and down in noise that i could hear a room away. so if you can tell ecoplus=crap.

Thanks for the answers.
I will go for the larger of the two fans then. The price is
almost the same, and I hope the noise is less.
A big fan is nice to have too, if I someday wanna upgrade my
lights etc.

I just installed a 6" Vortex and it sounds like a jet engine when its open but using 6" ducting really quiets it down. You can still hear it outside the door but it just sounds like a small AC unit or something. Go with a Vortex...VERY well crafted fans and boy does that thing blow :)

EDIT: I dont use a speed controller. Full throttle is the way for me.
