i was wondering if any one knows of anyplace on the interwebz where i can get good information on the evolution and growth of the weed market in as many aspects as possible during these periods.
I'm interested in the both the sudden rise and change from imported weed to many countries producing their own supplies so much they now export it (ie Canada) and the evolution and change from outdoor growing to the small guerrilla grows and massive indoor grows that are most common now

and of course what strains where most common then and what if anyone knows they evolved into

for example what is the difference between bubba kush and pre 97 bubba kush

oh ya and no chem dawg history please theres enough of that that on this site

Why not watch some documentaries.....

Here is a good list of where to start

1. The Union

2. Botany of Desire, marijuana segment

3. CSNBC specials, Marijuana Inc. , Marijuana USA

4. search IC

5. Greenhouse strain hunters on youtube shows large scale outdoor grows in india and africa

All of these are readily available on Hulu, netflix and other internet sources.

To add to Iron Lion's list

6. Marijuana: A Chronic History -history channel

7. Grass (narrated by Woody H.)

noticed I have seen these repeated regularly in the past few months. Trying to get ahead of the curve?

i got some old high times from my dad during the height of the drug wars...i couldnt believe how open it already was at that time. there are ads for rolling papers, pipes, stories mocking the cops for busting dirty ditch weed.

i would definately go on ebay and try to find some old high times...im not selling mine.

I can give you a brief history of my experience of toking in the UK.

I started in the early eighties in Liverpool. It was all resin and it was all top quality. It was generally named after it's country of origin, Afghani, Leb (Lebanese), Paki (Pakistan) and Rocky (Moroccan). Interestingly, the price stayed roughly the same at about £70 for an ounce for the next twenty years. I first grew out a seed in the early nineties, but had no clue how to make it flower. There was no internet to speak of and no easy way to look up the tricks of the trade.

By the mid nineties the quality of the resin was starting to deteriorate noticeably and dealers were starting to offer sensi (sin semilla) as an occasional treat. Sometimes the sensi had seeds in it, but as none of us knew shit we accepted the seeds as a minor irritation.

During the mid 90s I wondered of the train at Amsterdam central and into a coffee house and smoked a joint that melted my entire body until I was just a piece of goo on the floor, or at least it felt that way. That was the point that I realised that my tolerance had not been increasing, the quality of the stuff I had been smoking recently was crap.

Weed or green was in short supply and not having access to info about of HIDs, hydroponics, nutrients etc meant that many domestic grows were infrequent with limited yields. A dedicated toker would have to fill the gaps with resin.

Things carried on much the same through the 00s until about 2007. There was a weed drought the likes of which none of us had seen before that lasted all through the summer. I was getting the people who I would normally have relied upon for emergency deals phoning me to see if I knew of any. The domestic production was limited, pushing prices sky high, and then we had the rise of the Viet Bong, grow houses set up by Vietnamese gangs with a Vietnamese gardener who would always be an illegal immigrant. Now, resin is hard to come by but really shit badly grown grass is in good supply. I've had a couple of people showing me "gritweed", tumbled weed sprayed with silicon to look like it's covered in crystals.

In terms of strains nobody can really say unless they know a cultivator personally. Dealers will just call the weed after whatever is popular at the time.

Luckily I've been an outsider looking in for quite some time now.

Hope that's helpful, I enjoyed rambling anyway.

My thread is pretty close to that.

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=36181

It details what happened between the 50's and 80s. Ironically I have been thinking about finishing it out with the rise of domestic bud. Though that doesn't have much to do with sativas.

Long story short during jimmy carters second half of his term they went from decrim to antidrug and started using AWAC to stop major smuggling of high volume stuff like grass. Then this article should help a lil. People were forced to go back to mexico where it was closer and we share a border.

This article might help too.
http://www.cannabisculture.com/v2/articles/4766.html

During the mid 80's to 90's it switched from Colombian back to mexican. With increased border control US growers started growing smaller patches of pot that are harder to find, that they didn't have to smuggle , and of a fantastic quality that they could make a lot of money off of. 1 gram of dank is 20 dollars. 7 grams of shwag is the same price.

Things went increasingly domestic guerilla, or indoor with dutch seeds. You started seeing more Canadian weed in the 90s. 9/11 happened which tightened the border even more, and we've seen an even bigger domestic growth explosion, on top of the rise of medical weed. And thats where we are today.

All the pre-97 stuff refers to that Amsterdam changed their laws about cannabis breeding, and breeders were no longer safe to have massive breeding programs with hundreds of males and females to select from. With the decrease in selection, came a decrease in quality and stability of seeds sold after 97. Thats why you see "pre 98" bubblegum, kali mist, blueberry, etc.

Around 83-84 at the college I was attending in the midwest US, there was this fucking incredible shit. It had no seeds, was a brilliant lime green color and just stank to high heaven. It was one hit shit with the high lasting forever. Was incredibly expensive, but I didn't care. It lasted for as long as I knew these guys from the dorms (about a year), and then it was gone outta my life forever. Maybe it was some badass Hawaiian or something, who knows. The only thing that has come close to it was ECSD that I grew in 2006.

There was something in the mid to late 90s that Western Mass. growers had called Lemon Lime. It was incredibly pungent and flavorful.

Also at the time, it seemed a lot of green outdoor from Arizona and New Mexico...

And there was incredibly dank orange bud that some people in Boston were getting shipped in from who knows where. I also remember during the same time frame then beautiful Alice in Wonderland sheets of LSD...

Paraquat, Maui Wowie in 1 oz shredded coconut cans, and Jamiacan Lambsbread. My memories of the 80's and 90's. The 70's are a blur of Panama Red, Thai sticks and flavored rolling papers. THE GOOD OLD DAYS!
