attar = perfume, incense and is sometimes used in Himalaya as another word for resin (don't think it necessarily means hand-rubbed, just happens to be used in regions where resin is hand-rubbed)

In Persia, ‘attar’ signified a rare and precious essence, the rarest and most precious of which was (is?) attar of roses, expressed from fresh rose petals. The “essence” of that meaning has ‘expressed’ itself in many ways

sure, this is exactly the way it's used in Hindu, Urdu etc., and it will have entered those languages from Persian

the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals ruled India for centuries between them and were Persian, i.e. Afghan and Turko-Persian

A bit more on the history of attar:

The word 'attar', 'ittar' or 'itra' believed to have been derived from the Persian word itir, meaning 'perfume',[4] which is in turn derived from the Arabic word 'itr (عطر).[5][6]

The earliest recorded mention of the techniques and methods used to produce essential oils is believed to be that of Ibn al-Baitar (1188–1248), an Al-Andalusian (Muslim-controlled Spain) physician, pharmacist and chemist.

The Egyptians were famous for producing perfumes throughout the ancient world. They were formulated from plants and flowers before they could be added to other oils. It was later refined and developed by al-Shaykh al-Rais[8]a renowned physician who made a distinctive type of aromatic product. He was referred to as Abi Ali al Sina. He was among the first people to come with the technique of distillation of roses and other plant fragrances. Liquid perfumes used to be a mixture of oil and crushed herbs until his discovery where he first experimented with roses.

His popularity spread over other continents after he created rose water which was more delicate than the previous versions. He formulated at least 62 cardiac medicines out of which 40 were made from ittar. They include Attar of Oud, Attar of Roses, Attar of Saffron and Attar of Jasmine.

Attar is commonly used within Muslim communities and amongst natives of the Indian Subcontinent and Arabia to treat numerous health disorders, and it was widely used in Greek medicine.

In Yemen, a special variety of Attar was introduced by Arwa al-Sulayhi, the Yemeni Queen. This type of Attar was prepared from mountainous flowers and given as a gift to the monarchs of Arabia.

Abul Fazal Faizee gives another verdict of how Attar was used to making the Mabkhara-incense-burner. The barks that were used in Akbar's time according to Faizee were Aloe, Sandal, and Cinnamon. Animal substances such as Myrrh, Musk, and Anbar were used along with roots of special trees and a few other spices. The ruler of Awadh, Ghazi-ud-Din Haidar Shah used to prepare fountains of Attar around his bedroom. These fountains would create a very pleasant fragrant and romantic atmosphere by functioning cont

Yes that's the Ibn al-Baitar who described the psychoactive effects of cannabis grown in Egypt. Attar is used to describe various things with fragrant odors and in India castes of Muslim incense makers are often called Attars. For instance there's a Muslim community in India called 'Attarwala' who claim to be descendants of Afghani Hazar soldiers who arrived there with the Mughals.

Ibn al-Baitar...another great scientific of Al-Andalus,he was deeply influenced by Abu al-Abbás al-Nabati, another great botanist whith profound knowledge at that time.
Ibn al-Baitar as many others, migrated out of Spain, due in part to the raise of fundamentalism and rigorism which vilify the rationalism, neoplatonic, and aristotelian influences that made Al Andalus a place with a cutting edge science and philosophy.

Therevverend, Ibn al-Baitar, spoke the tamazigh language ,apart from arab, and he crossed all the Rif in his way to Siria and middle east. He collected in his long way more than 1000 species, maybe what the locals calls today beldia, was in his collection. :dance013:
