I know for every rule in the CEC theres somebody that died because of it at least that whats I was told, but it doesn't mean everybody burns there house down, Ive had extension cords run a bit hot but only cheap ones, make yourself an armored cable extension cord and I don't see a fire hazard.

I must be lucky with the regular ones because ive used them religiously all my life for tools and shop lights etc. none melted. You would think that if extension cords are such a fire hazard then pulling and stapling lumex on wooden studs would be a fire hazard. Just Don't buy cheap faulty extensions cords with the wrong awg size.

Heres a fire hazard that has happened to me, computer desk up against a baseboard in the winter with monitor power cable touching baseboard, monitor power cable gets melted through and sparks everywhere on carpet.
