ICMAG slow to load

when I login now, the board defaults to https , it didn't in the past. Is that a necessary part of the server load? In the past, you logged on to http and then would only be https if you chose to add the "s" to the url or if you followed a link that hat https . I would think you should default to http if you logged into the http login page, and go to https if you login at the https page. Giving that choice could save a lot of server load for those of us who dont want https.

Whatever it is, it's still making icmag slow to load. Just now it took over 45 seconds from the moment I hit "login". I timed it.
It's been doing that all day.

I see that. Looks like the server clock is messed up. It was correct yesterday!

Yes, the PMs seem to be one of things slowing down the site. The change I made to that section does not seem to have made much of a difference...

OK, found another problem with the PMs, that I just fixed, so maybe now you'll see the difference. All has to do with the indexes which weren't setup well (vb default setting doesn't work well on large sites with lots of PMs).

Problem with searches, indeed! Taking way too long, probably slowing down the server too. That's why you end up with 505 errors, cause the server has timed out your search. This is always a big problem on big sites. We might have to make an adjustment to searches, such as limiting searches to titles only, unless you search a forum.

I recommend you first go to the most likely forum and search there. Those searches are much faster!

OK, I've changed some of the search parameters so they seem to working faster now.

I've limited the # of results to 500 from 5000! Big difference in load time.

Also, now your search must be at least 4 letters, not 3 like before.

I hope this doesn't hinder anyone...

Still facing the same problem, tried 2 different ISP's , tried using tor, a proxy too.. same thing happening, pages never load unless I refresh multiple times, here's a screenshot:

"My IC" refuses to load. Was working just an hour ago.

Can get to the login screen, successfully login, and then the redirect screen times out and gives me a 500 error. Clicking 'click here if your browser does not auto redirect.' times out as well.

I can navigate the forums fine, and am even signed in after the 500 error. Posting fine too. But still I can't get to My IC... Can do everything but that...




Search has been slow for a bit, not sure if that's anything new, but am very glad to hear it's sped up a bit!!

yea skip, i was hindered before when i couldn't search 2 letters, 3 will really make searching here hard.

I'm dealing with the same issue as LD420, i can't reach "My IC" gives me a 500 error too...I can navigate through the rest of the site flawless though..

The site was down @ 5pm for about 5 minutes ... when it came back the pages are loading ALOT faster ... Thank you Skip & i hope it stays this fast

time should be correct, searches should be faster, but not sure about page loading, esp. IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF PMS!

I think this is a problem for many ppl who have thousands of PMs.

Have you thought of deleting your old PMs? Might speed up the loading of that page...

Since not everyone is having that problem I assume that could be the cause.

One thing you can do is run a traceroute to icmag (just look it up in google). That will show you where the hangup is on the way to your computer. Often it's not a fault of our server, but some link in the chain to you that is slowing it down.

This can indicate a problem with a router somewhere. You can check with your local IP to see what's causing the delay. Just send them the result of the traceroute.

I am concerned that some of you may being seeing the result of gov't snooping, filtering or recording of traffic and that could cause a slowdown, but it's not too likely.

Several things you (and others) can check on... How many big images are on the slow loading pages. Also check to see if the flowery fields banner is loading. It's 1.4 megs and needs to be changed, but I've got to contact the company about it.

I did find early on that many people were posting up images from other websites that were bigger than 4 mb. To load a few of those up on a page is definitely going to take time. And some pages have a dozen or more big images. And if the images are coming from other websites, then it is Their servers that are slowing down your page loading, not ours. I think this may be one of the biggest reasons for slow loading pages. Load your pics on icmag and they will display much faster than coming from other sites.

So we can't have a fast site and allow huge images, because not everyone is going have 20mb+ connections.

So for some of you it may be a combination of factors, slower internet connection, loading up pages with huge images loading from other servers, big banners etc. Sure it's going to take a few seconds.

If you see the images loading up slowly, then you know they're likely a big cause in the site being slow for you.

I will continue to monitor the performance of the site to see if there are other issues.
