I was in wally world today....... they had once again moved the popcycle molds......

the ice bins are with the refrigerator bottles....

the popcycle molds are probably a seasonal item.......

They were 88 cents.....

the handles were red blue green and yellow...

I had to ask someone where they were...

In my head though Im saying.....

my new cheap wick cloner......

Its really 2 inexpensive items.....

The popsicle mold and an ice cube bin....

a couple bucks each more or less......

The mold was 88 cents.....and the ice bin......1.62

2.50 total.....

I was checking this new cloner today......

One reason I REALLY LIKE THIS ONE BETTER....

is I can see thru this one...... not perfectly clear....but good enough to see a bunch of roots.......

In the picture in post 882 ..... you can see the vermiculite thru the plastic.....

for reference....the original post was done 13 june

I have been taking the clones on day 14 but had planned to leave these longer..... with more medium.....

But I think this first batch Im going to take on day 14....this weekend......

So I will provide some pics.....of my guerilla glue clones.....

My new goto method for cloning includes the ice tube maker....

either the old vesion or the new version at wall mart will work well....

A two gallon bucket..... and thermometer.....

Here is the heater to keep things at the temp you like....

Hagen Elite Radiant Mini Thermostatic Heater 25W A730

My first clones..... worked great... used 80 degrees on the first batch...

Still some experiments to do but Im very pleased.....

To keep your environment at the right temps for cloning

I highly recommend this method.....

I recommend that the heater temp can be set manually.....

In the big stores they mostly have small heaters that are preset temps.....

not as good for this job.....

High Burnt Rope... I've been failing misrably with the tubes, and I'm sure it's the temps. I really like the idea of the adjustable aquarium heater. Is the one you suggested: Hagen Elite Radiant Mini Thermostatic Heater 25W A730 adjustable? I can only find it with a fixed temp.

Thanks!

I keep sayin' its all about temps....

WHat no thermometer???

Absolutely necessary equipment for cloning..... probably 3 bucks....

Where I think the sweet spot as far as temps go is.....78-82

or 80 +-2degrees....

The science as far as cloning goes for plants in general.....

Plants will clone best in temps that are the same as with maximum growth....

Cannabis imo grows best in about 80 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees.....

Because of the warm temps Im currently not using that heater atm.....

but its going to get used as it gets cooler....

The normal preset small heaters are a little too much on the bottom side of the temps.....

sort of close but not perfect......

The heater has been perfect...... only ran a couple cycles thru.....

Its a bit more expensive that at the big box stores.....

I checked ebay.....15 bucks..... 7-8 bucks shipping....

I started these clones 14 days ago..... see post 882

I had 3 varieties....

guerilla glue....4

death star.... 2

and jedi kush.... 2

The jedi kush rooted but didnt make the cut....... 8 for 8 rooted in 14 days .... here are the 6 keepers...

Normally I would just plant the plug with vermiculite....but for the pics I rinsed the verm out.....

This method could be used for hydro as well..... I would probably take the clones as soon as I can see roots.....

This wick cloner.....simple and effective....

I know, it takes a while to get thru at times, LOL! I've got thermometers out the wazoo... my favorite is Harbor Freight laser, $25 on sale, and useful all over the place, air leaks, refrigerator, oven, grill temps to name a very few!...

I was using a drugstore heating pad under a flat with various depths of water for a heater... the thermometer kept telling me my temps were too low or too high, and very rarely just right.

I guess I had gotten lucky in my past, casual cloning successes with absolutely no regard to temperature... and now it's caught up with me, ha!

Right now, my ambient temps are 80-82°, so I'm going to give the tubes another go... but the small adjustable heater ought to be the ticket when it gets cooler. :tiphat:

Hey Burnt, how goes things...

As FYI, I've come back to this method after trying the perlite based mass cloner. The wick approach seemed to make them wilt, and when I went to a passive soaking ala this method, but using a large free-form pan of perlite, I was constantly battling root rot problems.

I would clean the container (bleach), use fresh media, and even started adding some h202 or bleach with water swaps (messy), within 3-5 days rotten!

This really put me in a clone hurt as I have several fails before I bailed.

So now back to using the original tube tray and so far they are holding up and not getting rotten. I am swapping the water daily and adding some hydro guard as warm here.

I like the idea of the semi-transparent Popsicle holders. One complains I had with the original system was the difficult in determining if roots had formed w/o punching out the cutting.

Thanks for the support!

My current experiment..... 2 clones

Big Assed clones....... like 10 or 12 inches....

These were taken 12 hours ago...... as far as wilting goes....they seem fine....

Management of the bag is likely to be important for a few days .....

ANyone want to comment how this is going to come out???? and why more folks dont root ......

Big Assed Clones

So this sets up a little race.... the clones I rooted and transplanted a couple days ago......vs the 2 Big Assed clones I took today.....

I would love to clone with big ass cuttings. Sadly my micro grow does not accommodate. Often I have to use a cutting that has grown into the top of the chamber and as a result are distorted.

I have seen a healthy cutting overtake a previous rooted, but stressed clone. If that is the point I suspect this may do better than previous.

So this sets up a little race.... the clones I rooted and transplanted a couple days ago......vs the 2 Big Assed clones I took today.....

I note today that one of the two large clones has rooted.....

I love the see thru cloner....vs the original......

Im not going to remove it until day 14....this weekend.....

I noticed a couple yellowing leaves and that normally means rooting.......

Lets see if the other big clone will root between now and sunday......

WHile people have said big clones take longer.....this one didnt........

These 2 clones were scraped on opposite sides to expose cambium layer......

I will be looking to see if roots grew out differently..... in the scrape...vs not.....

It seems the second one is also throwing a couple.....

Very good....2 for 2 rooting...... and very large clones...done not much different.......

I have very recently tried two ways to take much larger clones.....

This method..... the only thing I did differently really.....

was putting this cutting in a protected environment....(inside a bag)

to help the plant from transpiring too much.....

and I also scarified...scraped the stem prior to adding cloning gel.....

There were a few comments from folks that predicted this clone would take much longer because its old and woody.....

I found that his plant rooted in a pretty typical amount of time....and very well rooted in 14 days......

This picture you can see the part of the stem I didnt scarify..... not much for roots..... on opposite sides however....

heavy roots....big and fat roots too.....

Its a very interesting picture....and the reason I wanted to have a real good look at where roots were coming from....

Clearly on opposite sides there is an eruption of roots.....and where no scrapes..... nothing......
