I want to live like this, is it crazy?

Please keep the suggestions coming guys this is a big deal. You know, I just don't see how I could lose. The piece of property I want anyway, the tipi for a top grade one is a little over 2,000 bucks, but I want one anyway, power and water would need to be brought out anyway, I could be in it by september, and if I get through a northern michigan winter in it and like it I know I will just keep getting use to it. You'd be surprised, take the most materialistic asshole and if he had too he could live in the woods, get used to it, and maybe grow to love it.
I see no way I can lose in this except for the time I spend in it if I don't like it, but then the time isn't wasted cause I got to experience it. As far as the little problems, it would be fun to solve them. I've thought of some of them, like walking in dirt. You don't, you have gravel brought out. You don't have dirt floors either, there's stuff you can put down on the floor. It would be fun to make the place home.
I'm a major hippie, pothead, Neo Pagan, part Cherokee, nature boy. I think I should get a realitor and find a spot. Then start growing outdoor pot. Hey that rhymes

Also guys, please give suggestions on how to keep my possesions secure. I have some guns, so I thought I could put in concrete footings and bolt down a gun safe then grind the bolt heads round. I can't think of how to keep things like a Boom Box, Microwave, TV, ect secure. Any ideas? Like I say where I live we all know each other, pretty doubtful I would have trouble. But if I do the insurance company can pay for some of it.

Seriously, that would be a really cool idea. With a fire running, an axe, an underground water source, ganja seeds, books, solar panels, a beautiful lady and a guitar...what more do you need?

A job and a car would be a good idea but once those are paid you are pretty much free!

Have a guitar, but no lady yet. There are only about 4 single women where I live, and I've seen them, and I will tell you some Anthropologists better get the fuck out here and check out this freakshow. OK there's more women than that and a big city about 40 minutes away and women come here to shop.
I work in a cool little hippie type shop. Lots of tourists come. Bring fire sticks and autos. Me find women. Why am I talkng like that? OH I'm baked

Excellent idea!!!

Gotta love the principle!!! I have a cousin who has lived in one and he loved it, but he soon retreated to the comfort of a home with roof, windows & doors after a couple weeks of rainy weather :badday:

This type of dwelling could be much more sustainable yet equally in tune with the earth as a tipi. They say it takes 3 peeps about a week to build could be done cheaply or something amazing for $90,000 worth checkin it out.

If you buy land with a wood lot and make your own lumber, you can make a gorgeous geodesic dome house fer very cheap.

I have done some calculations, and I figure for 150-200K CAD I can build a total housing system that will provide everything I need form warmth for me and refridgeration for my supplies to a place to grow my food year round. And my house will last 200 years and pay me to live it, by producing excess energy I can sell back to the utility company.

Permaculture living is the future of our species, and those who learn it now will be the ancestors of those who will inherit the Earth......if it is inhabitable 500 years from now.

i think they are fantastic. would be great to have one but for camping rather than long term. like nokuy living in a van turns crap at about week 4.

the weather here would be ok most of the time. No snow though some areas would be hard in the dead of winter. I could imagine the attention you would get putting one of those up at a camping site or at a festival... you'd probably sell a few though.

It really doesn't sound like a bad idea. Damn good actually.
For power why don't you bring in a converted deisel generator that runs on SVO. I don't know how secluded you are but WVO is easy to collect, strain and use as fuel. Very little cost. I've been converting cars and now I'm interested in off grid living with generators.

However you go, good luck bro. But definitely buy the land. Don't squat, you might wind up tepeeless and maybe your new home will have room service and TV, but you probably won't like the steel bars and anal searches.

PEACE

well depending where your at you can get gas and water for freeeeee. build you a nich hut, bugaloo, cabin, whatever and live there. in the all mountain ranges (which there are a few in the US) have natural gas pipelines running from the mountain. you are alowed to tap into the gas line if you live in the mountains and get free gas. that means hot water, and heat. Water. get that from the natural springs there, the water there is some of the best drinking water around. it has natural good minerals in it that helps our body, unlike complete RO or purified water. Now power could be a concern, but they make natural gas generators. BOOM power. you have the gas so you can run the generator. just build a hut around it to keep the weather out.
simple you can live completly free here, its just how far your willing to go. but it can be done.

I like the idea, however, it might be a little more difficult to convince a tourist hotty to come live with you in your tipi:).

Oh and I second the idea of building a minimalist structure to serve as a cabin of sorts. As stoked as you are now, I can see that energy deflating very quickly when the real world creeps in on your tipi dream...

Hey Talos, Fun thread you got goin here.

If you are being called to the Thoreau experience, go for it and do it now. One thing that life has taught me is that there are some things that belong to youth. There is much less chance that you'll do it when you're much older. Not out of the question, just a lot less likely.

As has been stated, prepare carefully and get a lot of good advice--and don't expect a woman to co-venture this. again, not out of the question, just highly unlikely.

as for security, a stealthy underground safe or lockbox is essential for firearms and other valuables or heirlooms. But dude, you're a hippie, so forget about the tv. Just find a way to connect to the internet and bring a couple of kitchen conveniences. that way, you are not a juicy target, and more important, you'll come closer to the authentic experience for are striving for.

Good Luck

You can have a tv, microwave, hot shower outdoors, really anything you want, it would just be a little different. If you have power brought out, and water, you can have just about anything you need.

I don't want to criticize you friend, but it seems to me that you fell in love with a tipi, not the actual idea of living in one for the rest of your life.

And what would the difference be between living in a fully equipped tipi and a house?
Seems to me you're just as close to nature one way or another.
