I want to live like this, is it crazy?

Well, can't go into what got me to think this way, but here is what I want to do. I live in a gorgeous place, tourists come here from all over. Lots of outdoors and land. The trouble is, as usual, you want to live in a place like this it's very hard because the jobs don't pay much, and when the tourists leave in the fall a lot of the jobs go too until May when the season starts.
So here is what I want to do, don't think i'm nuts. I am TOTALY not materialistic, love nature, not crazy about society, hate our facist government, you get the idea. So here goes: I want to buy say 5 or 10 acres of land, then buy one of these
http://www.tipi.com/?source=google

and live in it. I would have no cost living, could have power and water brought out, and be left alone when I feel like being alone, would be out in nature and thats the only time I feel any peace. One of these Tipis say 20 ft in diameter would be a ton of space. You would have warmth, shelter (very pretty shelter I think) and water. I would still be around my towns people, but instead of living in a trailer on a piece of property I would live in something more my style. I'm part Cherokee too, so I think it fits. What do you guys think? I guess if your the type that likes to go to the mall you might think it's stupid, but if you can understand what I'm trying to do please tell me why this wouldn't work. What more would I need? I could even have a hot water heater put in next to a outdoor shower. So what do you think? I live very alone now anyway, and like to be out in the woods alone.

I remeber (sorta) waking with my girlfriend naked into a tent like that, with a naked Indian man in there chanting,.. He guided us through a sweat.. wow.. I needed that. I havent been the same ever since.:) .. I love Tipi's , maybe its the 1/8th Blackfoot in me:). I would also like to have one on some property.. that would kick ass, i could have my very own sweats:)..
Peace, cheers..

The place that makes them said that 10% of the people who buy them live in them year round, winter too. He said they are not a novelty, but are made to live in. What a cool place to have friends over to get baked. Add a dog (a women would be better) and I would be all set. Put it this way, what money would be wasted? You would have the land to build a house on or put a trailer on, I want the Tipi anyway, so why not try it? I could be in it by september ready to go. I think it would be good for me.

There was a thread on this where people got really into it, I believe a guy got one or was that the guy that said he was going to live in the wild for a while yet he went to school and online a lot lol.

I think Nokuy should have a lot of input on this.

why not buy the tepee when you get there so you have a plance to stay. maybe do a little growing save up some money and build a house (its worth it and very rewarding). then you can have a nice house with a kitchen bathrooms ect (i dont know how comfortable or uncomfortable you want to be). then you will still have your tepee which if you plug up the top would be awesome for hot boxing.

I second that....Tipi is cool for the kids in the backyard.

But I like my shower, kitchen, refrigerator, running water, air conditioning, heating, storm windows, carpet, chairs, bed, toilet......

You can have a tv, microwave, hot shower outdoors, really anything you want, it would just be a little different. If you have power brought out, and water, you can have just about anything you need. Be fun to try, can't see much downside, I want little and get along good outdoors without much.

My wifes 1/2 brother was born in a tepee,on top of Lolo Pass,ID. in 1982.
Ya her Father was an old hippie.
I was just talking to his mother last week about it.
Ther was like 6' of snow on the ground, they had to use snow shoes to get around.
I guess what i'm rambling bout all this,is to say a person can make this work in any climate.
It would be interesting to say the least.

PEACE;1TT

I wouldn't want to be in that thing in the middle of a storm. It is pretty cool though, whatever makes you happy.

The best part about living in a tent like that is you could avoid house (property) taxes. When the inspectors come over, ya take it down and say, house? what house?

Once your head is dry and yer belly is full, it all boils down to who you keep company with.

Bring on the tipis!

I say do it man! Sounds like a dream to me, living in the UK it's just not possible but if I lived somewhere that has the kind of wilderness you guys have i'd seriously consider it.

Only thing I can see to worry about is making sure you're not on someone elses land, if it's a national park or something you may still need to make sure it's ok as someone is bound to notice you at some point.

Good luck man.

e2a: build 2 tipis so you can use one for a winter harvest

well bro as "saix" said, and most peeps on here know that this is my "bread and butter". Still sum things I gotta work out to get back tho the "bush" myself, but thats where i'm headed.

"Genkisan" will be helpful too.

IMO the tipi will only work if your planning a "short term retreat"...I'd sure prefer a "white-trash trailer"...seriously.

a "yurt" as mentioned is an awesome option, but man w/ in a week in a tipi and your gonna be lookin' for the next best thing.

keep in mind my experience comes from Alaska and N. Canada where family friends own Backwoods wilderness lodges....mostly cozy cabins and woodstoves (instead of rawhide and smoke).

anything long-term is gonna require lots of preperation. ....make that "constant preperation"...(maybe take a peek at the "are you prepared thread")...ill get the link if u cant find it.

its not a bad idea at all bro, and many peeps on here fell that way...being self-sufficint is what it's all about...thats how we do our weed anyway.

people "generally suck", society "generally sucks", and I never wanna be a burden to anyone but myself.

i'm not sure where you are planning to pitch your tipi, but climate has gotta be a huge consideration....I cant think of too many places where a tipi is gonna be "ideal shelter"....your gonna get really sick of living in/walking in dirt ALL THE TIME....i've lived in a tent for months at a time, and in the bed of a pickup for months at a time... shit gets old really fast.

buy some land in Alaska or Canada...lots of property already has a cabin at least, and you could take it from there. ...just a thought. (youll probably have a hard time living off the land anywhere else unless u have a bit of a farm too).

also bad advice to "squat" in nat. forest or on state parklands....you'll get found out really fast....even in the bush. Peeps dont always realize that your more obvious the more secluded you are...you stand out like a sore thumb...where as in a city you can blend in and be anonymous really easy...(I still prefer the backwoods, cuz I aint gonna put up with peoples bullshit)

I have always wanted a teepee, but I would have to make it myself if I owned one. I always thought it would be cool to make a teepee and have it in the backyard. Maybe as the outhouse, I have always thought that would be pretty nifty.
