I suck at cloning. That's not a question but this is

Instead of having a fluro over them can you just put the dome by the edge of your canopy where it gets 5-10K Lux? in terms of lux thats about the same as a low watt fluro 1/2 a foot above. Only difference is the angle isn't coming in from the top. I just ordered 3 trays and domes, so Im gonnna step up my game, when I have some cuts to spare I will do a side by side. One under a fluro, one just on the edge of the room/light.

Didnt read the whole thread but definitely sanitize the scissors and I like rockwool it breathes and stays moist. I don’t even use a hormone and they root for me. I like to use a dome but only 1/2 to 3/4 on so they can breathe a little

100 pack of sterile individually packaged #16 surgical scalpels, with a handle, $10.

Never having to sterilize old box cutter blades again.. priceless.

Hey brother ! :)

I haven't read the whole thread that i just discovered but, in case nobody proposed it yet, here's the easy way i do it :)

24 h before cutting the clones i spray the mothers with a neem oil + 1/8 strenght nutes mix.
It provide some food and prevents pest infestation during rooting while "sealing" the moisture content inside the leaves.

I pass my blade over a flame to sterilize it. Certainly not the best way but it works well enough as i'm ashamed to say i've been using the same blade the last 5 years.... :)

I then cut 4 to 6 inches clones whose 45° cut stems ends i immediately soak in ph 6.8 tap water filled clean black painted glasses.
To make stems hold straight in the glasses i use plastic clothespins (placed just under the first leaves set) resting on glasses rims.

Once i'm done cutting, i place the tray under an 18 w 6400 K fluo so the clone's heads are roughly at 20 cm from the tube. I don't put a dome but i spray very lightly with water every once in a while (depending of the weather, you'll know... ;-) spacing it more and more.

I let them soak three days, with hardly 1 cm of the stem into the water.
If you go too deep it slows the rooting. You don't want to make the clones too comfortable, you want them to worry about water and make roots faster... ;)
If leaves start drooping re-cut the stem as you need to get rid of the air inside it, then put it back in the glass.

Unless you have insects falling inside, there's no need to change the water but you may have to refill some after the first 24 h.

The fourth day, i soak light soil mix filled beer cups (with water drainage holes drilled under...) with the same tap water and i stick the clones inside, pressing gently but firmly the soaked soil around the stems. It helps drain some of the water.

I then place the tray at about 1.2 m from the same fluo and let it stay there for 5 days. I spray with water a last time 24 h after putting clones in beer cups.
During the next 3 days, depending of the rooting, i move the tray closer and closer to the fluo.
If leaves start drooping i go back some...

This method would be a pita for big operations but it works very well for small ones.
I guess soaking it in the beginning accustoms the clones to a high humidity level and paradoxaly prevents fungi in the end... Depending on strains, state of the mothers etc... clones usually take 7 to 11 days to root.

I try to have nods at the end of the stems but it works as well when i can't.
I even rooted (just for fun) a turned upside down clone... a branch bottom cut of course... :)
I don't cut the leaves tips. There's certainly better methods but i like to keep it simple and, as you know, there isn't much fancy stuff on my island ;)
It's true that i only cut 12 to 20 clones monthly but, although i have a good memory, i don't remember the last time i lost one (i immediately knocked on wood after typing that... ;-)

Hope it helps my friend :)

Thank you again to everybody who has posted! :thank you: Unfortunately I lost the 3 that were going to what appears to be wilting, the leaves dried and curled up. Plenty of water in the vermiculite tray. We had a temperature snap with high and then low temperatures the past few days and I think that didn't help them. As of now I'm gonna hold off a bit on the cloning to try and get anything ready for outdoor season. Thank you all and hopefully I can revisit this travesty soon.

Otry to keep your temps stable at 70ish. Few of mine drooped but i just sprayed and turned the light off for a bit.

If you are trying to save a pheno, you could try re-vegging your plants when they are done flowering

I've just started power washing up close at 1000 psi and hosing everything down superfluously with 91 isopropyl between each cycle, wiping down with a couple rolls of paper towel. Probably not as effective as a good scrubbing, but after a few dozen of those, I was starting to worry about the rough texture of my plastic inviting bacteria in.

I'm hoping to not never have to scrub no more buckets any damn more..

Results

Not trying to resurrect a dead thread, but here are the promised results...only about 5 days late.

As they looked on 5/28 when transplanted:

Liberty Haze:

In their Hempy Cups:

One Super Lemon Haze clone did not have any visible roots, however, was still perfectly healthy (woody stem). It was transplanted along with the rest. If it roots the success rate on this run is 100%. If it does not, 94%. I can live with that for having done NOTHING for the two weeks it took them to root.

Peace,
starke

Nah I'm glad you posted Starke, I wanted to see how those were doing, and they are doing awesome! I am gonna give it another shot next weekend. This weekend spent preparing outdoors.

Anybody have the bottom line on using a humidity dome on the cloner? Yea or Nay.

I don't use a dome, but if you choose to I'd only use it for a few days and gradually leave it off longer each day

When you say cloner you mean like an aerocloner or what? I can't find the thread now, but I read you shouldn't use a dome on aerocloners because they provide the right amounts of oxygen and moisture to the root area so that you don't have to shut down transpiration in the leaves by keeping them in an overly humid area.

Just my opinion based only on my own observations: Excess moisture has killed more clones than anything else. The RH in my little veg area where my cloner is located is 56%. Under the clear Sterilite cover the RH is 66%. Really just about a perfect veg RH - nothing excessively moist. Like I said in a previous post, I do not ever observe condensation on the inside of the Sterilite cover.

I use a TurboKloner. It had a 'cooling fan' that I stopped using, but I've been thinking about an air pump and stone in there for additional oxygen.

I couldn't read the whole thread mang so many having issues with clones.. well some things that caught my attention is temp range 70-80s . fluctuations are terrible constant 78 -81 is where u want to be let it get into low 70s ur gonna be waiting a while ... also the #1 most important thing is mom health u need healthy strong moms weak moms give weak cuts with issues... there are hundreds of ways to clone but without healthy moms and temps out of range ur just wasting time...

I used to suck at cloning too. Huge game changer for me was Clone King type of cloning system on amazon, I will never clone other way. It's dumb proof, water only, no dome, roots in 10-14 days. Put a cucumeris slow release sachet on it and you are golden, perfect clones every time.

They generally stay lush green until they root!
