Sorry camera just crapped out on me.
When I got my first ball, I had her in a big aquarium with a big hide and branchs with substrate and a overhead head lamp.
As my collection grew I found out rather quickly that this was not to efficent for "MY" needs and decided to go with tubs. Haven't looked back since.
I have since built a couple racks and have them filled with tubs, bottom heat with heat tap and I use white news prints for a substrate very easy to clean. Heat is controlled by a helix. No hide and a nice big water bowl.
My racks are very similar to this guy's right here. http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=58302
My animals are all very healthy, hardly miss a meal unless while breeding. I found it difficult to control heat/humidity with a glass aquarium.
Looking foward to the pic, do you know the sex? Is she a normal or you get your self a morph?
ps- I might as well warn you now, this addiction can get VERY expensive
very interesting bro but those bins seem kinda small to me? also i was thinking is plastic ok to keep them in? i know plastic has alot of chemical in it, and it not really created to be lived in. i will go with whatever you say as i can see you know what you are doing but i always try and play it safe and be forward thinking.....
Im not a snake guy...i have picked up harmless black and gartner snakes when I was younger, but the usually give me the willies...haha..but i must admit, there are sopme really beautiful pics in this thread...i would have to say the BumbleBee is awesome looking....Very interested in seeing the eggs and then seeing the young snakes tearing out of the eggs.....Very cool..they certainly are very beautiful, I had no idea there were so many different kinds, with awesome and extreme colors and patterns. very cool. Aslong as im not stepping on the venimous ones when I go tend my outdoor plots Im good. i dont care for Water Mocasins, Copperheads or the Rattle snakes...they really do WIG me out. Once I see one, it fucks me up everytime i go back to that spot. Nice thread...post more pics.
BBB, I wouldn't feel comfortable with you basing your choice of inclosure based on my opinion.
I can say that balls in the wild in Africa are solitary animals, they seldomly leave there dens unless looking for food or a mate. They don't like being exposed to the open. And for that reason a small tub is the number one choice for me as I feel it mimics a den fairly well.
Have a look at this guys set-up, Ralph Davis. He has been keeping captive balls for many many years in tubs and never had a problem. But if you only have a minimal amount of snakes, he also explains how to properly keep them in aquariums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx8FrA1Gzlk
Thanks rubbanutz420, you would shit if you ever came to my place. I also keep different species of cockroaches, scorpions and centipedes.
dude. u shouldnt be so modest. u r not a snake owner. you breed as well as maintain many snakes. i take you advice seriously. if you say a rubbermaid is fine i wouldnt question it. i am trying to make it nice as well as economical. my lil homey (KUSH) is ill. i so think i am going to be diggin this hobby. para, i was on the nerd website last nite. are those $35,000 all white with blue eyes for real? that had me trippin.
I don't blame you at all for wanting to have your first ball on display. This is how it always starts, the addiction
You just need to take extra measures that everything is in check. Don't get to big of a tank and if you do make sure to add lots of hides and clutter, rolled up news paper balls. They don't like the feel of openness. Don't get a hot rock, your snake will burn and scar. Add saran warp over the top grill to help keep the humidity in. Whatever substrate you decide to use, make sure to keep it dry otherwise Kush will develope scale rot and then require treatment.
A hidden snake is a happy snake, if Kush is aways out and about he is trying to regulate something, so keep an eye out for that.
As for the 'BEL' Blue Eye Leucistics, they are indeed a Very beautiful snake. The prices are high but they have come down quite a bit recently. It is a super form, of lesser ball or butter ball. Basicly what you can do is buy a lesser pair for about $1200 and you have a 1 in 4 chance of producing your very own BEL for a fraction of the price
Here is a lesser that you would need and here is a BEL that you could produce.
Fuckin' sexy!!!
