Hunting whitetail deer with a 12 gauge shotgun

Let me start off by saying I eat what I kill. No life is taken without my benefit.

I learned my hunting skills by reading books from the public library. Then took this knowledge to the outdoors and taught myself.

I like a shotgun hunt. It is more challenging than just using a rifle from a tree stand shooting from a long distance. There is more chance for the deer to be wounded and get away using the rifle. You must very patient and some deer will detect you hunting just sitting on the ground. Hunting on the ground is popular in Texas.

3” buckshot shells work best in a magnum 12 gauge shotgun. You can get a 12 gauge pump magnum shotgun from a pawn shop for $150. Some hunters put 1 shell in for the first shot being a slug and the second shot being buckshot. Buckshot pellets to shoot if the deer is running away and you can be less accurate.

If you get a clear shot, aim for the head. Otherwise aim for the deer’s heart. Lead the deer (aim a little ahead to compensate) if its walking.

Where to sit: Sit up hill on the ground using a small chair. This would be above deer’s noses. They can smell well. Deer may use a path to get in and out of an area. Sometimes there is only one way in and out due to cliffs, etc…Sometimes the deer will take their hove and make imprints that are like circles in the ground. They ejaculate in these and wait for female deer. They may check these spots daily. Other signs to look for are tracks, scrapes from their antlers on trees/brush, and deer poop. Hunt down the firebreaks. These are areas cleared with a bulldozer to prevent fire from spreading if it starts. Trees that bear nuts and water are some other places to check.

Camouflage: You should be in camouflage although some orange alerts other hunters of your whereabouts. A army jacket and orange hat or cap works well. Deer piss on your feet should be good. Rub some you’ve bought all over your shoes. Also put some on your jacket. Don’t wash with soap the night before hunting. No smoking although a bowl is nice to get into nature. Chew tobacco if you must get your nicotine fix. Walk directly to your chosen spot and don’t wander around.

Its good to go the day before you hunt and check the area to see where you should sit. The next morning before sunrise when you go out, find your way with a flashlight. Some hunters hang toilet paper on branches to find their way. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to see deer.

Because its winter, you should dress warmly. Wear extra socks. You have to remain motionless (really no movement) or deer will see you. This can be cold and uncomfortable if not dressed well.

Gameland is a good place to go. You may have to pay a fee to the department of natural resources to hunt this. Paper companies grow stands of trees to produce wood for paper. Deer love these.

Things to take along on your hunt include food like potted meat and bread, Vienna sausages, and soft drinks. A warm thermos of coffee is always nice. Don’t forget a rope in your pocket to drag your deer if you get lucky.

Firearm (shotgun only, no rifle hunting allowed here) season starts in 10 days here, I'm looking forwards to it. Hopefully I'll get one this year, I'm ready to eat some nice jerky.

There's nothing like hunting an area infested with deer.....we just walk tall brush and grass, similar to pheasants, and there are so many around you can just point and shoot with a .22 Mag.....they're NOT smart by any means, and they'll stand there trying to figure out what you are when you drop them. Buddy of mine bought a Grizzly band saw just for venison. It's a beautiful thing....keeps the freezer full, along with striper and other goodies :woohoo:

Cheers!

buckshot is not best for a 12 gauge....use slugs...aim for the heart or lungs not the head....sitting uphill don't matter because of thermoclines...if your up hill in the evening your sent goes downhill....bucks don't ejaculate in ground scrapes and wait for female deer.

don't forget about scent lock clothing...and chewing tobacco is not good...it stinks and you can't spit or deer will smell your saliva...be carefull what you rub on your shoes and jacket because a mature buck in rut will attack....never go scout the day before you hunt an area....scout weeks or months in advance if possible...deer can smell your scent on a branch you touched 2 days ago.....use a flashlight with a red lens.

lol whoever says deer are NOT smart don't know the animal very well, and what are you doing shooting them with a 22? deer are smart as hell, and have a nose like no other. unless your shooting the yearlings.

i'm a die hard bowhunter, i'm always within 2 to 30yds from deer....u need to wash your clothes in scent free soap...take a scent free shower with unscented soap...activate your carbon suits in the dryer...wear rubber boots...spray scent free spray...scent free mouth spray...all this and you still need to hunt downwind of the direction you think they are coming. i pass on all does and immature bucks and hunt for mature whitetail bucks...although i'm thinking of starting to take a few does for herd management....deer hunting rules.

Bow hunting is on here until the end of the month. Ive managed to bag a nice doe, a four pointer and a six. Got the doe and the four point out of a tree stand and got the 6 the night before out of a ground blind.
What do you all use for equipment?
Im using an older PSE Nova with aluminum arrows & NAP thunderheads.
Got a NAP prong rest on the bow and use a Scott release. Nothing special but it shoots well and is light weight, accurate and quiet on the shot.
Shotguns are the only modern firearm allowed here for deer hunting. I use my trusty Rem. 1100 with 2 3/4 inch Brenneke slugs. Sometimes, depending on terrain/conditions I use 000 buck but much prefer the slugs.
Black powder starts the middle of December and goes on until the end of the year. I use a 50 caliber T.C. Thunderhawk inline with pyrodex pellets and saboted 300 grain TC jacketed bullets.
We can take two antlered deer, which are any buck with horns over three inches and as many antlerless deer( buck or doe) as we want per year.
Our seasons are just starting for the year. Psyched! So far so good. :woohoo:

Perhaps I should've been more specific. The area where I hunt does not have smart deer. They can't help it; they're just a product of their environment. And what is that? A place where they have NO natural predators, abundant cover, and even more food. They're not skittish at all. In fact, they're quite brazen, so for them to see a human standing 75 yards away is no need for concern, and they usually go back to eating your flowerbeds or tomatoes.

Cheers!

hey fat albert...do the bucks get big with good genetics or are they retarded deer from to much inbreeding? i know what your saying...some deer just on the outskirts of metro areas are dumb as boulders...they have no reason to be scared or use there natural skills.

capt....i shoot a reflex bow, carbon arrows, and muzzy broadheads....i have a 50 cal thompson center omega muzzleloader with pyrodex pellets and not sure of the name of the bullet but it does have the plastic casing too and goes to a point....can't think of them off hand i haven't taken it out yet this year. i've passed on 9 bucks and 6 does my last 3 sits...the rut is full swing here and i'm just holdin out for a mounter since we can only harvest 1 buck a year....muzzleloader don't start until the end of the month and goes until the 3rd week of december....i might bring out my 1300 winchester 12 gauge with a red dot scope this weekend but i'm not sure yet....gun hunting isn't as fun as bow hunting except you have more range but up close and personal is half the fun.

whats up red...i'm ready when you are bro!

right on, sitting out in the woods and enjoying nature is the best.

half the reason i hunt is to go out there and sit to see all the real life natural animal movements and scenary....i've seen deer mate, bucks fight, bucks sparring, bucks make rubs and scrapes, does with their babies, coyotes, fox, skunks, coons, ect, all in there natural enviroment and doing what they do.

i'm at the point i see deer every sit, i'm basically a part of the tree, no scent and well camo'd, just be patient and deer will come.....i used to shoot everything i seen but now i just target mature bucks and let everything else walk, if you get nervous or have buck fever when you see deer just let a few pass a couple times and you'll get used to having deer close.

hunt ethical, if you don't have a clear shot at the vitals don't take it, you don't want to wound a deer and not find it and have some deer out there hurting and helpless...take good clean shots and a quick harvest....u owe it to yourself and the deer to do it right.

for you anti-hunters reading this, i love deer just as much as you, it's actually my favorite animal and i repect them......hunting is not only tradition but you need to keep the herd healthy....an unbalanced herd is not good.....for you hunters make sure to practice so when the time comes you can make a quick clean harvest.....stay ethical and don't be a irresponsable hunter or trespasser that gives hunting a bad name....good luck....peace

Im a bowhunter, I love all gods critters, with gravy....I took 3 deer this year........a 178 3/8 p&y 13 point whitetail (I was pretty baked when I took this Buck, but I was "high" for a week afterwards) .. a nice 150 class young 8 point Mulie.....and a doe (mulie)......

I missed a 42 yrd shot at a bicolorphase black bear ...My rangefinder must have zeroed in on a branch a few yrds in front of him(it said 35y)....as my arrow hit a good 5 feet behind him....he just turned and looked at me , like "what was that for??"...."YOU SUCK"....lol..

and my elk hunts were exhilirating yet unproductive.....I do have great video of a 7x7 screaming at me from 200 yrds.......and I had a BIG bull moose walk within 3 ft of me back in Sept which nearly made me crap my drawers.....Its amazing how still you can sit when yer about to be trampled....

I use a Bowtech Tribute with a 30'' draw @ 65 lbs, carbonexpress Maxima hunter350 W/blazer vanes....and G5 Montec broadheads 100grain....everything I arrowed this year made clean pass throughs....which is a first for me...Im used to seein the deer run off with my arrow stickin out..

I love shooting a bow...Next year Im going old school and using a recurve...

Good hunting to everyone....stay safe..

i only believe you have the right to kill an animal if you can do it with a bow, knife or bare hands. it just seems incredibly unfair to me to do otherwise. how would you like it if you were some bad ass 6 point buck and some wimpy human blew you away? bullshit right? any dumbass can shoot a gun, it takes skill to hunt with a bow or a knife. there is honor in battle, but gun technology is kinda screwing it up.

nice...in 02 i got a 148 4/8 p&y 15 pointer....last year i had a 130-140 class 10 pointer at 25 yds and my carbon arrow hit the smallest branch ever and deflected the arrow....i was using them new high country carbons and they are just to light i also only had 75 grain muzzy's.

last friday the day before 1st season shotgun i was in my stand until noon, i was about to leave so i rattled 1 last time.....about 30 yds in front of me this monster 170-180 class typical 12 steps out behind this brush and rubs and fights this 30 foot tree about as rounds as a mini basketball....i'm just pumped so i stand up, clip my release to the string and get ready...he fights the tree for about 5 minutes by then i'm calming down....he makes his way towards me but he's behind some brush so i draw back and i got my pin right on his shoulder waiting for him to make just a couple more steps at 25 yds.....right when he's about to step out some fool blasted 3 shots from their shotgun on the neighbors land about 3-400 yds away and the buck just stopped in his tracks...starred where the shots came from for a minute...turned around and went back...i didn't have a shot through the thicket.....i tried to rattle, snort wheeze, growl, and use the estrous can but he wasn't having any of it......man i was pissed and still am....but he's still in the area and there's alot of big deer where i hunt....and i still have 2 months of bowhunting and 3 weeks of muzzleloader left! peace

I got video this morning of a big 10 point mulie chasing Does all over my back yard.....I got out the estrus bleat and hit it a couple of times.....I have him on video walking within 5 feet of my deck lickin his lips , waggin his tail and lookin like ,"I know she aint in the house!!"...

I love videoing deer as much as hunting them....but calling them within range is a hoot....esp when they are all horny and rut crazy...lol...

absoulutly, the rut is on hard in my area now.....it isn't full blown breeding yet it's the seeking/chase phase just like that mulie you got on video was up too....best time to be in the woods all season.....after the rut is over it will be back to hunting food sources.

nothing is more cool when you rattle, snort, growl, or do an estrus bleat and the buck comes in wondering where the hell them deer are that were just fighting or making them calls....i've called immature bucks back to my stand 5-6 times before.

you should check out that new growl call from M.A.D. calls...it comes with a dvd for like $20...it has some crazy footage that any deer hunter should see....unreal
