(CNN)The approximately 730 people who live in a small town in eastern Colorado have been told not to drink the water because there is evidence a well is contaminated with THC, the principal psychoactive chemical in cannabis.

A reverse 911 call went out to residents in Hugo -- a little more than 100 miles east-southeast of Denver -- on Thursday, said Micki Trost, a spokeswoman for the Colorado emergency management department.
Public works officials advised the Lincoln County sheriff of the problem.


"At this time, investigators are assessing the situation with state and federal authorities," the sheriff's department said on Facebook. "Bathroom usage is still safe, but until more information is known to us, out of an abundance of caution, avoid drinking town of Hugo water."
The sheriff said bottled water is coming to town.
The department used its Twitter account to say testing of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is ongoing at the well.
"Tests began after complaints, no level of concentration, water well #1 is still being investigated, no symptoms to anyone," the tweet said.
Colorado is home to legalized recreational marijuana sales and production, but local jurisdictions have their own laws.
Neither Hugo nor Lincoln County have permitted such businesses.

We have so called safe acceptable levels of lead and arsenic in water but people will lose their shit over non toxic thc their bodies cant absorb into their blood. and towns test the public water supply for THC? especially a small town like this

There are many false positives when you treat water. Someone dumped some other stuff in the well and it made the news as THC. The drug warriors are probably licking their chops. THC isn't very soluble in water, and the amount needed to register in the water would be many many pounds. Funny though and I hope it doesn't screw up the legalization process in other states.

Pretty sure THC does not float freely through a water system, especially if its pretty damn cold....

We all know what happened to THC when it gets cold in water, it binds and falls out of solution..

Saw this on the National news this morning and my first thought was...scare tactic.

Wasn't it not too long ago authorities advised people that the safest way to dispose of old or unused pharmaceuticals was to flush them down the toilet. Maybe somebody was hot and had to flush their stash, lol.

They probably found the tiniest trace amounts of THC and are using it as a scare tactic. There's no way there's enough THC in the water supply to get someone high.
