You say they all look the same, but have different weights? I would go along with what's been said about light spread. We're the plants that only yielded half as much as the others, on the outside of the table/ light footprint? Or maybe the ones that didn't do so good, were in the shade of others? Lots of variables. Were some plants branchy, and others just a single cola.
In a perfectly executed sea of green, the plants in cubes would be touching (packed together). The cubes touching and growth above combined together will create an area under the cubes where the roots will spread and mat together . Individual root space doesn't matter once that happens. I speak from experience, as I have had flood tables look as I described above.
I like it as a grow method, just takes a lot more work. As compared to growing 4-6 bigger plants in the same footprint. Once you get a perpetual rotation going, plant count compared to yield is on the grower. My old man had a had time wrapping his head around it. Until i showed him that I could pull the same amount of weight with 8 plants instead of 180-200.
