Dubi: I need suggestions I'm a seed super freak but for the most part it's been heirloom veggie seeds I do have some marijane landrace but not many. I will be purchasing very soon and need suggestions on 2 sativa and 2 indica landrace varieties as well as some crosses within each. Are there any that are limited supply and never to return?

While my main direction is preservation I am looking for a few good crosses OTH is already on the list.
As far as height I can deal with fairly tall (8-9ft) plants but of course would prefer something other than 8-10ft that goes for both in and out.

Hello Waterdude and sorry for the delay in the reply,

If you are looking for 'purer' genetics i'd recommend you oldtimers' haze and malawi for sativas and chinese yunnan and pakistan chitral kush for indicas. They are very special genetics and they make great hybrids easily. Let me know if you have any doubt. Best wishes!

Thanks Dubi
I'm not really looking to make hybrids (I don't have the patience) I'm looking more to preserve landrace varieties so someone in the future will have the opportunity.

I grow the straight landrace to increase seed count and smoke but I mostly purchase hybrids from someone else like your OTH as everyday smoke.

I'm trying to do on a small scale what the Global Seed Vault is doing. We currently have a 20'X50'ft freezer with vegetable seeds (from all over the world) stuffed to the brim and I'm tying to do the same with as many cannabis varieties as possible.

I don't mind some selection within the variety itself but for storage I'm not really looking for crosses even if they're in the same family ie Sativa or Indica by that I mean sativa from Thailand crossed with a sat from Jamaica. Ideally the beans would be just like found in the country of origin because of the diversity.

I will be purchasing your genetics the wife told me to just get them all but I'm going to start with those you selected and I'm sure I will enjoy them.

MUCH THANKS for the reply and the suggestion please forward any more suggestions you might have.

waterdude, intresting idea.
Your are doing what many of us do, in a bigger scale.Somehow you feel it's the last moment to preserve something that is vanishing?
Who do you preserve them for? Some seedbank? Or what is they future use?

This all started as a whim we travel a lot and are in the million miler club by several carriers. I've always been into gardening and when I saw native plants that interested me I tried to find seed for it.

For me there is no real feeling to save something quick it is just a "HEY THAT'S COOL!" I want some seed. I have shared rare or hard to come by seed with several seed banks and individuals but there is no real PLAN so to speak. The problem with the Jane that I see is the hybrids and people gifting hybrids to farmers in landrace country. It really doesn't take much to muck up the whole system once you introduce a hybrid to local farmers that produces more hash or bud or what ever they grow for, the system of the native landrace is done the farmers will almost always go for the gold.

Don't get me wrong I have nothing against hybrids as in some cases it brings out the best but if we lose the landrace varieties how do you start breeding projects from square one?

Before anyone ask yes I understand that in reality every plant is some form of hybrid just because of open pollination but it takes time for a plant to acclimate to the local surroundings and even then the genetics will be totally different than the original.

So no big plan just time, interest and opportunity and it helps being a seed pack rat (seed super freak).

That's a very honorable plan Waterdude,

To preserve the landraces and pure lines before they are hybridized it's very important to save this particular genes for the future generations, the more they are spread, the higher chances they will be alive in pure form in the future.

This is one of the ACE Seeds main goals: work with landraces, preserve them and to share them with growers all around the world.

Keep up the good attitude, best regards!
