How to prevent plants stretching

too little light will cause stretch
warm light (red) will promote more stretch than a wide spectrum ("daylight spectrum")

personally i think CFL's are the worst combination of little light penetration and heat...

If there are no other factors that could cause the stress, I think it's the lumens output of the light. How old is that light..maybe it needs to be replaced?

Low phosphorus and using nitrate nitrogen instead of ammonia or urea nitrogen will prevent stretch. Cool temperatures also will help.

many thanks!

I veg seedlings and clones under a 125w cfl, they start to get stretchy and then I move under the 400w and less stretching occurs.

im quite interested in how to prevent stretching and what bio reactions cause stretch, apart from the simple "they reach for the light" explanation, we all know plants stretch mostly during the night period. i didnt find sufficient explanations yet, so someone knows?
