how tall before topping

About 8 inches is when I take out the scissors. the cells are multiplying rapidly at this point in the plants life, and topping will result in anywhere from 2 to 8+ tops when done in this stage. Makes for good plants. take it easy.

usually around the 5th internode is where you want to do your cutting. That is where I have always done it and it always works out beautifully.

To me it all depends on how your plant started their lives. If they started as clones, I base it on the final height desired. If the plant was started from seed, I wait until the nodal points are staggered. If the nodal points are still growing right next to each other, I will wait, regardless of height.

Some things to remember, not all plants respond well to topping. Always make your cuts clean, and close to the nodal point to avoid die back. And there are alternatives to topping. Low stress training is a great alternative.

yes LST is a great technique and one I use along with topping with very great success. You end up with very nice stout bushes with numerous bud sites all fairly large. ;)
