How safe to you feel posting info and pictures on the internet?

I run behind paid proxies and hide my IP address and MAC address. Did you know you always post the hardware mac address of your internet adapter of your computer every time to surf to a web site. And if law enforcement confiscated your computer they could link you to that activity even if you were behind a proxy.

So what if anything do you do to protect yourself?

Weigh in!

I don't think this is the right section for this Q at all, but IMO the FEDS (who would have to be the one to tap your shit and find out what you were doing anyway) have a lot better things to do with there time then tap your shit and bust a small personal grow, especially nowadays that oboma told um to back off dispensaries in Cali. I post pics all the time and hide behind nothing, and s you can see thousands of others do on here too. Just don't post pics of your face or things that could make is real easy to find you and you'll be fine, which is obvious and you know you know.

also i have been told that if you registered your camera with the manufacture and post a picture online they can tract you via the infomation you registered with (if someone selected you out of all the people posting sheet online).. but there is also a way to make this infomation hidden... anyone know?

lol,.. ok dude you smoke WAAAAY too much weed! Man and i thought i got paranoid now and again. I'm a graphic designer and there is no hidden information in jpg's you post online that would link to the camera that took it,.. and after posting it through a site like this its going to do that,.. lol.. come on man lets think shall we.

DIYer,
Thanks for the comment. I agree this post is in wrong place, where should I have started it?
I also agree that the Feds aren't interested in small grows (under 100 plants).

But don't kid yourself no one needs a tap. Law enforcement goes to the companies that have the info and ask them for it, not you. BB's, Craigslist, MySpace, Facebook and all ISP drop their drawers and give the listing. That is how the RIIA finds and prosecutes stealing music.
But don't worry about putting your face on the pictures. your leaving pecker tracks (electronic signatures) that will bring anyone interested right to the door of the house that you login at.

I don't think law enforcement cares until they stumble onto something, were probably safe. It's just that aside from all my friends here at IC absolutely no one knows I grow. I pay cash at the hydro stores. I am lucky enough to have 5 different stores within 30 miles, I spread my purchases between them. I never order online.

Shhhhhh don't tell anyone I'm a grower! lol

inkster,
There was talk about cameras and printers, don't know if it ever happened as a standard.

DIYer,
If your in the graphic business then you know about the histogram and flash info that is recorded with each shot. Did you know if you crop a picture and post it, if I can download the file I can look at it uncropped.

I'm not paranoid just throwing it out there.
I better go smoke a bowl!

you guys are great,

LEO nosing through our PC's

LEO nosing through our PC's

What worries me about online gardening sites is when somebody gets a visit, their computer always gets taken and looked through.

What info are they getting and not letting on they have, what info can be gained by a computer is vey scary indeed

Things have eased off a bit since comrade Obama took office but i still have an uneasy feeling

Gee, nothing like a little paranoia on Sunday morning. To start off, here's a hint as to where I live - it's 10 #$%^&^%$ degrees out! Man, I hate winter.

Anyways, where were we? Oh yeah, paranoia is a good thing in measured doses. I live in NY where drug laws are still draconian, and medical marijuana laws can't seem to get off square one. So first of all, you must be very stealthy. Secondly, no one can know. You meet those tow requirements, guess what? You're safe! LEO is NOT gonna search through ICMag to find guys growing weed. They got their hands full with guys carrying around explosives sewn into their underpants...

Other than a bookmark to this site, I don't keep anything on my computer. I take pics, post them here, then delete them from my hard drive.

It is what it is.

There is no 100% safe way, if police wants to find us, they can.
Is only a matter of not making it too easy for them. And yes i dont think they will spend that much time hunting small time growers. But dont keep your grow record on the computer, if you are worried.. Put it on a CD, submit your shots from another computer, then the one you use for everyday stuff. Or just dont think too much about it and do what you feel is your right, and take the punishment if they come knocking on the door.

Dr burn bud,

Your router / modem will provide a hardware adress to the website. This can be set at anything you want at any time you want. Its in the routers menu.

EVERYONE should be connecting to the secure icmag site, and making sure when they click links they copy and paste the link and add the S instead.

https://www.icmag.com

However i agree totally proxies are important. There is also some great software called TOR you should checkout.

You should look at tor, its an open source anonymous internet application.

For one second i want you guys to think about this.

The man hours required and the PAY required for these highly experienced tech's to track and log and build a case against individual growers? unless it was on a huge commercial scale they would get a much better ROI (return on investment) by putting the cash into low tech operations.

At the end of the day, if your super carefull there is always a bigger idiot then you.

Now im suspicious your a troll.

Thats absolute rubbish. You cannot look at imaginary data outside of an images pixel range.

Improperly modified camera files can contain serial information, and anything else coded into the camera.

choosing "Save for web" in photoshop overcomes this.

Please stop bullshitting everyone.

Your correct if you save as publish for web ur safe. But I said download a picture.
And hitech do you know what a hardware mac address is? And yes I know you can run software to change that. Ask any gamer that has been bumped off a site. But you got to buy it.

One question for U What is a troll? I have never been on a bbs until last week

a) your a troll.

b) You just found out about mac adress's and thought youd enlighten the world with your limited understanding. You didn't.

c) You sound like a gibbering leprachaun.

d) You dont need to buy it, its part of your cable modem or router. Your cable modem or router does not want you to lose your privacy.

***EDIT***Id just like to add after speaking with Dr burnbud that hes not a troll or a leprachaun, or any other fictional creatures gaelic germanic or otherwise. And hes a lovely guy.

I strongly believe those who don't fully understand a complex subject should try not to help others even though it is from good intentions. As it may produce terrible results for the believer.

Actually the mac address is layer 2 so it's only seen on the broadcast domain for the IP segment you're on. And if you're behind a wireless router then the mac address of your wifi router will be seen at the next hop router (your ISP) and no farther. IP routes the traffic all the way to the last hop router and from there a layer 2 broadcast is done (arp, ie. who has IP x.x.x.x, this mac has IP x.x.x) Hiding your IP address is most critical I would think. But yes, if a warrant was obtained from an ISP to ask who had this IP at this time, etc. and you were NOT behind a proxy then they would know it's you. If you are behind a proxy server that's overseas they would have get the log files form that proxy to see who came through to this site at this time, etc so I doubt that if you used a proxy in RUSSIA for instance that they would ever know who you were.

Make sense?

BTW, if you're really worried, don't post anything.
