I always thought it a bit silly to worry about power consumption. I set up a wood shop in my basement. I put up 700 watts of flourecent tubes on the ceiling. Then I put a 400cfm air cleaner on the ceiling. Then a 650 cfm dust collector, cabinet saw, router table, bandsaw, planer, jointer, shaper, power tools, tv, computer etc etc etc......... I know of about 20,000 other guys on a forum I belong to, that have similar setups all over the county and I have never heard one single story about LEO poking there heads around. I have a friend that runs a 13x40 lathe and a mill on three phase controllers in his garage and nothing. I'm running 3 hp motors all the time and anytime I'm working down there, all the lights are on as well as the air cleaner.

I'm not running all the tools at the same time but woodworkers KW usage is pretty high and nothing ever shows up but a bill. Maybe 12/12 light cycles are the give away but it can't be straight power usage.

I would just think that if it was the monitoring of electricity usage only then I would have heard something from some woodworker at some point because we never stop complaining :pointlaug :joint:

Edit: Electricity rates with the two power companies here are around 3-4 cents for the power. When you add all the taxes and delivery chages etc etc (so basically taking the bill amount and dividing by the kw/h used gives a TRUE cost of 8-12 cents per kw/h.

thanks soilman and others i've looked into propane and think this will help, but how bout the ideal of 2 lights starting up then a few minutes later start the other 2 in a attempt to level out a spike? thoughts

For power consumption, get a consensus of what ur neighbors are currently paying, then use just below the 2nd or 3rd highest one.

For power spikes you could use one of those things (forgot name) that switches power from a single ballast to two lights. One light goes off while the other goes on, ballast is 24/7. No power spikes there.
Or just build a lightproof box and just move the plants from dark to light and back. Use to do this had no problems (mostly home tho, no work :))

Not sure how much they run and there has been debates going on how "safe" they are, mostly people cutting corners and/or not using proper guage.

You could go out of town and have an electrician rig one up for you, or buy one. Heard they are expensive tho..... nothing a single harvest can't pay for ;)

i like this ideal Irie Islander, anyway to get the information on everyone's electric bill in my complex?

also a "flip flop" is what i think you mean and i need all for lights on at same time

I have had my 3 1K's come on at the same time for years, power spikes are neato to talk about and such but hold little value here.Having the correct sized conductor and breaker for the load is what you need to concern yourself with.People that concern themselves with HID power spikes in the context of conductor size or anything else really have never put an ampmeter around their conductor during startup or they'd stop flappin their gums about it lol

Soilman.......It`s 10 cents per kwh where I am as well but did anyone scroll up and check out his edit with link?........It could be just as you say SM about by the time everything gets tallied up where he is ,the "true" kwh cost is different from the regular schedule...... .....BUT.......The dewd`s right as far as base cost.......It`s cheap as hell.......Less than 6 cents non-summer and lil over 6 for peak usage periods...with $4.00 extra charge monthly was all I saw for additions to bill but surely there`s gotta be taxes and shit added to that huh?....Peace......DHF....... :sasmokin:

To find out power bills just walk door to door and ask. Tell them you want to make sure you are not getting screwed, or you think someone is somehow tapping your power. You can also ask them what they are using. Just to get a general idea of how your two apartments match up and how different the bill is.

My friends and I do this even when we do not plan to grow, power company likes to dick around, although they have a new meter that can be read from the main office as well as from my house easily... suppose to be accurate... I still dont trust those bastards

Pay your bill on time and do not steal electricity.

It really is that simple.

Your computer uses as much wattage as a 400 watt HID light if not more.

Paranoia will destroy ya but a little paranoia is good.

7 cents per kwh in my area.
I agree with an early post about just cutting back on other power uses. I have all CFLs, I only flip on a light if its really needed, I unplug (not just turn off) anything Im not using. Your stereo, cable box, tv, microwave, etc. all vampire power even when not in use. Since my place is 100% electric I dont even run the HVAC stuff unless its really hot or cold. My last bill was a bit over $50, running 1400w or so.
