i have just ordered a 400 wt hps from insidesun.com, and iwas wondering how many plants can i flwer in a cab that is 5ft long, 3 1/2 ft tall and about 30 to 40 inches wide. i will be doing mixed starins of bagseed to try and start a perpetual harvest.......any ideas on my q?s
Yup, that 3.5 feet of height is going to be one awfully big problem.
I mean, how much is left after the light is in? after subtracting the height of the pots? what about carbon filters and extraction? will they be outside the box?
You may need an altogether different space. Can you stand this thing on its side?
Otherwise you will have to go for very short indicas or some kind of ScrOG improvisation. It's doable (I've harvested 1.5 foot plants in the past!) but it's quite tricky (perhaps more work than it's worth), yield will be seriously down and as a beginner you may well mess it up and be disappointed.
i will be putting afghani clones into flower as soon as they root or what not,, so i dont think it will be that much trouble, as for the fan and light well that depends on how many plants i can flower ie maximum number of lumens per sq foot.
400 Watts @ 50 watts per square foot will give you a grow area of basically 2'-8" by 2'-8". That isn't a very big area, maybe 9-12 plants in a sog, flip the lights when they get to 4 inches or so in height (they will nearly double in size) and grow out some very nice single Cola Buds. If you really know how to grow you will be pleased with the results.

Well the rule of thumb is 45 to 50 watts of Metal Hallide light for vegetative growth and 55-60 watts of high presure sioduim, 400 watt is good for 3x3 area and if you grow sativa, you should only grow no more than three and Indica no more than 5 plants, with flowering and budding, you only worry about the first foot or foot and half of plant heigth, that is about how much light will be able to pentrate the leaves to flower and bud, and after sexing the plants you should also thin out the top to get better bud production and then you can clone from the cuttings, pick the best 4 plants and out the best four pick the best one and that should be placed directly under the light, with plants that should give 100 watts per plant
sounds good big bro, im hoping to get some sativas in rows, bent on there sides and do a all sativa sog with two to three plants, hopefully the side branching wont be a problem
ditch the hood, go vertical with a cooltube. Hight problem solved. Or, you could do modular scrogs. Give each plant it's own mini screen, that when placed next to each other, makes one big screen.
