how many clones...

hey peeps!! i'm just curious as to how many clones i can get off my mum without freakin her out. i usually only take 4 at a time, but this mum's gettin kinda too fat for me. i'm ganna put her outside and let her and mommy nature dyke out. i'm leaning towards taking 8 for this last time, think she'd hate me for it, or would she be ok? thanx for the help peeps.

hey have you guys ever heard of bonsaii mum? lol dang, what are you guys, tree salesman? lol thanx for the info, iread about that and that's why i want to get rid of this 3 footer and make me a mum. maybe i wasn't specific enough when i sat fat. knowing that it's 3 foot, i'm guessin choppin all that shit off wouldn't be the best of ideas, maybe i'm wrong....but wouldn't cuttin 3/4 of her be a bad thing? oh yeah, have you 2 ever heard of bonsaii mums?

NO start chopping. sure keep a clone of ur mom as a mom if u like but i'd say u will have no problems chopping away.

thanx for the replies cobo. not trying to sound skeptical man, i just thought it would be bad considering it wasn't bonsaii style mum. have you done this? what was your results? anyone else ever done this much trimming at once on a mum this size? no saying it's huge or nothing, but after looking at that bonsaii style this is like godzilla.

Take a few clones First, and keep the best looking one as you new Mom and flower the big Bitch

To get a handle on understanding how taking cuts affect the plant, remember why you cut to prune. Every time you take a branch, two form in it's place. Instead of one cola you now have two for that cut. Take two branches and you get 4 colas, etc. If you take enough cuts you eliminate all main colas and replace them with numerous smaller colas in bush form.

If you have a mom and take cuts for a year, she's gonna be nothing but bush with a hundred tiny bud sites all over. There's a point of reducing returns where it becomes counter-productive to take any more cuts, at which point you flower it after cloning to replace it. Once you learn the art of pruning for effect you find that a plant that's donated a hundred clones will flower out a bag of airnugs with little or no colas to speak of.

IMO it's better to selectively take lower branch cuts for cloning, FIM the main colas to give you four main colas per that branch, and flower out the mom. If done right a decent plant can give you 8 main colas of decent yeild. If the idea is only to keep a mom for as many clones as you can preserve, then flowering and yeild are tossed out the window and cut at hearts' content. But don't expect much from the raped mom, she'll stay alive indefinitely - but good only for more cuts later down the road. It's common practice, because of this, to cycle the moms by taking a cut and growing it out to get cuts and flower the mom that gave you the clones. Then that clone becomes the new donor mom and the cycle starts over.

To throw a wrench in this system, some strains will try to auto-flower if too many cuts are taken over a long period of time, or if she's just vegged way too long and the genes are programmed to finish after a certain timeframe.
They could be stressed into giving up and trying to finish too, but I need to collect more notes to comment on that.

Just my 2-cents' contribution to the confusion.....
