In a 4 inch pot, how long can a new seedling that has just been watered go without being wartered again? they will be under 2, 40watt floros, I have to be out of town for 7 days. Do I need to worry?
For 7 days hmmm.. If I were you I would water it good before leaving and put a plate on the bottom with an inch of water in it. That way if it does dry out, it can leech water from the plate.
The soil should never dry out all the way with seedlings. Let the soil get alittle dry because this helps grow a nice healthy root system. Use the wieght of the pot method to determine. If it's light then water. I water just enough to wet the soil. The water usually doesnt' even flow out the bottom. It's just enough but no too much.
or take a 3/8 inch cotton rope, push through the bottom of your container, take a tray and add water, place something to keep the pots above the water level and let the rope thet you put in the container hang in the water. as the plant start to dry out the rope will wick up the water as needed. it is better than leaving the plants sit in the water and having wet feet.
vonforne did you say the pots should be above the water level? So the water will actually wick uphill into the soil?Thats pretty cool I've heard about this before is this the wick method? It seems to make more sense that the pots be lower than the tray of water but I can see it working uphill
