How long until we are re-built?

During the peak of the Doomsday Prepper fever, terms such as EMP, and Solar flares were common place.

My question,

If suddenly all tech were to be fried, how long to restore society to 2015 level of technology?

We have already achieved this level, so imagination would be no problem.

I'm sure some things would be done better. i.e. the power grid.

Depended on when "it" happens, engineers, computer programmer, power company workers could be miles away from each other.

For me, the major problems would be distance.

My prediction,

it would take 15 years to return to 2015 level of technology. It will be different than 2015 (No cable companies, more paper hard copy back ups.)

I'm thinking about N. Korea. They are at least 50 years out from the Korean War, and people think they are locked in the Stone Age. I would make a poor survivalist as I would miss my hot showers and pizza too much. It would be like camping.

It would take decades, maybe centuries. Once society collapses, people will exploit the remaining resources and then kill each other for the last bits. It'll be all "Mad Max" until there is nothing left to fight over. Eventually, the few remaining people will start working together, but all that technology will be lost and its back to the iron age. Simple tools, subsistence farming, etc. Think early 1800's.

....and with tens of thousands of zombie dependants to care for.

food won't last but a month or so, gasoline less...no monies or any expectations of help from the money hoarders, the military will be busy protecting the politicians, fema will begin using those billions of 40 cal rounds.

we will recover current abilities and tech, but it will never look or be the same...

When I was young, with ease I know about 10 different phone numbers. I knew about 30 dirty jokes by heart. I can do easy math in my head, and spell correctly without spell check. Youngsters think that is amazing!

Your term of fried suggests to me more of an EMP than anything from the sun, UV etc etc ...where as EMP a strong planetary size electro magnetic pulse, the time it takes to replace them electric motors and components with fresh built equivalents...all from china naturally, about a year from here ...I'd say

you do have a spare
old laptop
car battery
starter motor
hps ballasts
old fan
fridge/freezer compressor
buried deep in a mine ...?

....me neither, but I'll get by, shame about my seed store tho ...lol

I have to agree with welder dan, human aggression will be the demise of the human race. Imagine no water in any large city in merica or most industrialized countries, after day one or two it will not be pretty.

Picture this, you live in a major city...."Something" happens...After 10 days there is still no power, no water, and food in the grocery stores was gone after day 3.....Lets say a Carington(solar storm, in 1859 that fried telegraph wires it was so strong) type event

Now picture all the day to day activities that would stop...

Garbage pickup
Water/waste services
RX delivery...both legal (heart meds, etc.) and illegal hard drugs such as coke, meth, crack, etc.
BOOZE delivery
Food distribution
ATM's
Credit Cards
Banks
Phones

Now Add in the ENTITLEMENT attitude and the fact that it seems people like to RIOT when they are upset and you got a whole lotta fun :)

Now what happens when people start to realize or even hear RUMORS that it is gonna be permanent.....If you think it is going to be sunshine and rainbows you got more hope for humanity than I do.

Blow one of the Big Transfoformers in a transfer station and you can wait MONTHS for the replacement. We be FUBAR'd if this happens to hundreds, never mind thousands :)

and the supply of it, is gonna be a serious issue in the near future ...I tend to agree!

I don't know, there's a lot of variables and it all comes down to how prepared we are. If everything was fried suddenly but what caused that was short term, it would depend on how well prepared we were. Did we have replacement parts ready or were we unprepared? For critical systems there is usually pretty good back up. I don't think an EMP would fry things as what's being suggested. Maybe some electronics fry and those would be replaced but power plants and power lines would still be intact. So recovery would be the length of time to swap out damaged parts.

Now if it were a more catastrophic event like a nuclear blast that not only took out our active technologies but also our power sources and manufacturing then you're talking I'd think a lifetime at least. Once you start going beyond that though then it becomes iffy because you're expecting people to restore something they've never experienced directly.

*edit* i should have medicated more often today.. getting all outspoken at people for just not knowing any better.

ya know, imagination never seems to be a problem for people who don't have it.

and i'll tell ya, it would take a fuck of a long time, because trying to put it back the way it was is like insta death sentence from any thinking person.

i've spent my whole fucking life being educated and erudite and diverse trying to make this place liveable for people, instead of for buttlickers. you think we're going to waste a chance like that and help people set it up the way it was????????!!!!!!!

"some things could be done better" ya think?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!

"in the first place" america with infrastructure collapse = something you don't know about.. because you *think* you know about it, because you've seen it on tv and hollywood for the last #### years.

how can thoughts share space with so many preconceptions..

the reality is that infrastructure collapse = no tv or movies, which is going to severely affect the way most americans think, should they attempt to. instead of pumping out dumbass movie script reactions, you're going to have to start *thinking* about things when hollywood isn't there to kiss your butt better at the end of every day..

and when you actually, really, think, instead of get your ideas from tv, you discover that violence doesn't propagate in quite the same way as people who watch tv think. someone blows all your family away, it's really a different thing than rambo or airhawk or whatever.

arcology.. learn about something with thinking in it... or watch some dumb movie (hint: the people who make movies don't have much motivation to actually help you be intelligent).

i can't fucking imagine if it was all blown away, some guy thinking, shit, i need to find a network admin to help me set my shit up again so i can sit at a computer and balance accounts then go home and watch people pretend to live on a big screen. that's why people chain people to the back of motorcycles and stuff.
