How long to start females before males..

Hey guys Im going to give breeding a try and was hoping to get some information. I plan on breeding inside and have selected my male plants. My question is what to flip to 12/12 first. I assume you would flip the female a couple weeks early because male plant are supposed to finish before females? Anyways i know ive heard the answer several times but cant seem to find the right info with google searches. Any information on when you flip the male and the female would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I flip them at the same time and gather the pollen from the males when they are ready. Then I can apply it to the females at the optimum time.

Same strain? Then same time works. Depends on the strain id say. Female indicas and male sativas will need different start times and vice versa... pollen collection will make your breeding much easier

After pollenation wait at least 5 weeks to harvest.. ive had success at 4 weeks but prefer the dark brown mature seeds to light coloured seeds that still pop...

the answer to your first ? is how many seed ya wanna make, big female = alot
small fem = a few,and also
,i usaually hit at 35 daze, but ive hit clones sooner
ive had in a ziplock bag with rice in it
pollen stay viable for almost 2 yrs in the freezer but i think rule of thumb is 6 month
ur really not breeding its pollen chucking see what works for you and your space

best advice is put a male and female alone and flower together then ya know how it works

kinda like when ya get laid for the first time

well if you are just going to let male pollinate over female then start her 1st by like 3 weeks so she is good and ready for pollen. If you are capturing pollen and the applying it to certain buds start them together.
The best method I have seen is the chop the top male cola off at about 15". Then stick it in a cup of water at a 45 degree angle under any 12/12 light or a window with a piece of plastic, foil, or glass under the balls to catch pollen let it dry for a day. Then put it in individual paper packets and into a jar with desiccant. Freeze for long term storage taking out 1 packet at a time lets others stay frozen and viable for 2 years or more

Pollen should be collected the second it is released. Water kills pollen. Longer it sits the more it dies from humidity.

Best way is segregate the plant once its about to release pollen. Have zero air movement. The pollen will drop on parchment or foil or even just paper you place under it. Once the balls r formed they will pop as long as there is light stimulus. 12 12 does not matter so much at this point unless u want more and more pollen to be made u need the keep 12 12 and good amounts of light. If space is an issue chopin the braches and water method works too.

thanks guys. I found a really odorous tangie male that smells like a bag of oranges and want to experiment with making crosses. So I figure I will just throw him in with all my female clones (jager, gelato, ogkb, nysd, crippler) and try to collect pollen and see what happens. should be interesting...

Actually pollen stays viable much, much longer if it's stored properly. I just used frozen pollen that is around 6-7 years old, and Sam Skunkman wrote that he has used frozen pollen that was over 15 years old.

When it comes to pollinating plants..
With the limited experience that i have, matured males of 10 week-strains usually start dropping pollen after 2½ weeks of flowering
..but i like to pollinate my females at around 3½ - 4 weeks of 12/12 so that they have time to grow some buds before pollination, cause flower production slows down after that and the plant focuses on growing the seeds.

So for males and females that have the same flowering time, i like to start flowering my females a little earlier than the male, if i'm flowering them in the same tent/grow room.
..usually i flower my male in a separate space.

Check out the "Breeder's Laboratory" sub-forum for related info and this sticky-thread on collecting and storing pollen:

That will yield a giant shitpile of seeds even if you pull him out after a couple of weeks of flowering. If you leave him long you'll get a lot of immature seeds.

IIf you want dozens of seeds rather than hundreds keep him separated in still air, gather pollen on paper, transfer it to a small container & use a small artist's brush to pollinate a branch or few. Turn off circulator fans & spray water on adjacent areas before you start 'em back up. I put a twist tie around the pollinated branches to identify them. I flubbed the process last time & consequently have a lot of seeds, all through the crop. Pollen is extremely potent- it doesn't take much.

the solution to that is using a Qtip instead of bush. Just dab and lightly touch pistils not letting pollen get in the air.
