How Long Do Seeds Remain Viable?

The thing about a refrigerator is its a humid place.... If you use the freezer you better be sure those seeds are dry as can be.... As in, sitting out for a month dry.... Excess moisture can freeze and possibly cause damage to the seed. Noone is really for sure what technique is best because the research hasn't been done....Storing in an air tight container in a dresser drawer and growing them out every 5-10 years seems to be the safest bet IMO....

i think i was told they were frozen, but im not sure. i double-checked and they are definately the original beans from '78. best plant i have ever grown was a oaxacan so im excited as shit to grow these out. i will be doing a completely seeded run so this line will stick around.

I recently germed a run of seeds I did back in 2001 and got 29/30 to sprout. They had been in the fridge the whole time.

Howzit bro. Hope all is well with you and yours. We germed 2 yrs ago a cross we called skunk melt here locally and the seed was from 1983 i believe. it was kept in a baggie all air sucked out and then inside a old bean dip can in the crisper in the fridge. So i think they can last forever but thats my 2 copper coins. yea. peace.

My old man always talked about the afgan plants he had back when I was a little kid, said all he needed was two hits to get him stoned. Well 13 years later he finds the canning jar full of seeds he saved. Some are currently in a paper towel, in a container on top of my monitor, I'm hoping I'll at least get a few viable seeds so I can grow my the weed my old man brags about, and make some more seeds for future use. I'll post again if I have any luck.

Damn Seeds are a highly successful strategy. Maybe we should include them into the most successful plant strategy of all time! The Angiosperms or Flowering Plants.

Sorry to be so rude but these things are truly amazing. I have some that are a few years old. I am not exactly sure of the age of some of them. I would germinate some of them today if I knew who my room mate was for sure. I own the house but am looking for a low key person so who knows when the time will be right.

My peppers and tomatoes are doing OK- but I tend to over water.......

The Skunk#1 freebies from Sam The Skunkman were about 10 years old afaik, and they germed.

I keep ours in the door of the fridge.

A little over 24 hours later, and so far 8 out of 12 seeds have cracked, and the beginning of a tap roots are coming out :D I'm stoked

I have some seeds that are 2 years old I'll try and plant them in a week or so. I found a nice spot close to my university, up in the mountain.

I'm pretty confident that they'll sprout..... I've kept them in a cool dark place so I think it'll work out, I just have 3 seeds so if it doesn't then I'm screwed.
