How hot is too hot?

You are still going to have 315w of heat from those lights. Those lights get hot. Hotter per watt than people think.

I have several cabs. One is a small rubbermaid type. I had two 40w CFL for a total of 80 watts. I used them for veg. When I turned them off and turned on the 150w HPS the box ran 2 degrees cooler than with the cfls.

You need more fan power. Use the 120mm for intake but also have a passive intake whole too. You can't have a 240cfm exhaust fan and the only inlet a 120mm PC fan. It will only draw what the pc fan pushes. With an extra passive intake the bigger exhaust fan can draw more air out of and through the cab.

If the inline fan you get has a 4" diameter opening than you need 8" of intake opening. The intake should be twice the exhaust.

Your not going to get around the ventilation issue unless you go down to a 150w HPS or similar cfl. Work out the noise thing guy. How about putting an aquarium on top to have a bubbling noise. Something needs to be done because you need ventilation. Enough ventilation and a 150w HPS will yield more than poor ventilation and a 400w HPS.

He's in New Zealand. No lowes. But theres plenty similar places. Most 150mm inline or centrifugal fans will move much more than 120cfm. This is the part of the grow i ALWAYS over engineer. lol. The difference between buds grown at 30 degs and 25 degrees is worlds apart. IMO
Take tarzans and everyones advice. Get a better extractor fan and use the 120mm PC fan for a intake fan. You'll thank everyone in a few months.
tru that

Im attempting to convert a vertical 305lt freezer into a flowering cabinet, it will be located in our main living area so noise is an issue.

Ive tried everything I can think of to reduce the heat from a 400 watt HPS system. I cant go down to a 250watt HPS due to expense.

Im still testing this design so my plants are safe at present in their veg cabinet....lol.

So aside from trying further ideas on the heat issue, here is what I would like to know hypothetically:- If I attempt to flower my plants in the environment below what will most likely happen?

Plants will die?
Plants yeild will be low or poor? If so by how much?
Any other issues other than mites loving it? Maybe I could just breed commercial quantities of mites....woohoo.

Ambient room temps are around 25c 41% humidty. C
Cabinet temps range from 32 at the bottom to 37c towards the top, humidity reads to low to measure on my digital thermometer .
If I attempt to flower my plants in this environment what will most likely happen?

Plants will die?
Plants yeild will be low or poor? If so by how much?
Any other issues (other than being good for mites...lol)

Thanks in advance.

Don't mind the out of control growth :joint:

Your right about heat being the biggest issue.......to be honest, you'd

be better off gutting the freezer out, that foam inside the walls really hold

the heat in well.....more radiant heat than ambient.....

Firstly, I'd move it outta your main living area. Seriously, for a whole bunch of reasons.
Maybe then you can have a wee bit of noise... As someone said, have an aquarium or something to cover the noise if you're really worried.
Other wise, here's some ideas to cut down the exhaust sound. Have the ducting straight as possible, maybe have a baffle or something in the ducting, use insulated ducting, have the exhasut fan in its own insulated box and get a fan speed controller.
I wouldn't worry about a wee bit of noise, freezers make abit of a hum anyway. Esp if they are old.
If anyone is nosey enough to ask what the sound is just say you think it's a bit buggered but it still works, then tell them to mind there own bloody business!!

As everyone has said, whatever lighting you use you need good ventliation.

and why is my spell checker telling me that I spelled fahrenheit wrong???
It is a proper name thus needs a capital! Fahrenheit, was a dude with a temperature! :sasmokin:

With a 400 you are certainly running the gauntlet with temps. However, if you run a sealed light unit via a cooltube or a glass shield, and have an external ballast, it may be possible. I'm attempting to run a 250 in a very similar sized cab, and I'm attempting to do it with 4 12cm 40cfm PC fans, 2 for the light and another 2 for the grow area and scrubber. If need be I can add more fans or upgrade the ones I have with more powerful units. The fans I have are very quiet Scythe fans, notorious amongst PCers for their low noise level, and I can't hear mine unless I stick my head against the cab door. With a 400 you are going to need more power than I have, and I still don't know if the two venting my growbox will manage once I attach a 1.5 square foot carbon scrubber to them. I will add 2 more and some more inlets if they dont.

Check out Red Greenery's 150W HPS cab for some tips, and try to design your box in such a way to be able to add more fans if/when necessary. You can turn them off as things get cooler during the winter there, and try to get enough weed before the heat starts next summer.

You should be able to order those Scythe fans online too. Remember, the bigger the fan the more it can move quietly, so go for the 12cm jobs, and go for quality, 1 fan I bought was rated at 23dba but was at least twice as noisy. I'd think 6 50cfm fans might be enough if you have an effective, sealed cooltube or glass shield, but you'll still be in for a battle come next summer. Just stash some and shut down during the summer months

I do worry about noise, Ive got a nice home theatre setup and most of our leisure time is spent in this room (I did say Ive got a small house) and any extra noise gets on my wick, lets not even mention the Mrs!!...lol.

Ive converted it to CFL's, 3x 105 watt. Ambient Room temp 23 deg, cabinet temp 25 with desktop fans running, 27.8 without and my almost silent!!!!!

Cheers for all the advice and tips folks.

I would have liked to stay with the HPS but it was gonna cost a heap more money and more noise, and if a fan failed my crop would have fried, so for my first grow im gonna try the CFL's.
