I'd start with fluro's if you can. If you must start with the HPS I'd start maybe a bit further away, just in case. 24" should be sufficient...18 should be in most cases, but why chance it. HID's are intense, too intense for tender seedlings at times, and it is a fine line between too much and too little.
Great chart pontiac!! It doesnt differentiate between seedlings and mature plants though, so it doesn't answer our question completely. Fantastic catch though, K+Rep
All that chart shows is how many lumens are at each distance, it has nothing to do with heat or how old the plant is. A heat version of that chart would be interesting if that we're possible.
the plant will tell you how close or how far to put the light, if it's to far it will start reaching and stretching to quickly so if you pay attention you'll know to lower it.
but i normally keep my 400mh about 18in away from my seedlings so i'm sure that would be more then safe for your 150.....you can always use flouros and keep the light 1in away.
You can grow a much healthier vibrant seedling up to 4 or 5 inches with tubes floros,I keep the lamps about 1/2 above the plants at all times and when they are 4 or 5 inches tall, they normally have 20-25 leaves. This is when I put them under HID's.I've tried with a 250 and a 400,nothing beats flo's for seedlings
