How do you silent your squirrel cage fans?

I found some mufflers online and wonder if they really work. Anyone has experience using them? Which should i get? Duct Silencer - Fantech or Suncourt DuctMuffler. If i get them, do i need to get 2 silencers for one fan, meaning one for inlet and one for outlet?

thx!

I dont know if you mounted the fan to a wall or something solid, but thats a bad idea sinse the vibrations make alot of noise. Try hanging the cage fan with some bungee cords or something.

I think a single duct muffler on the output of the fan would reduce noise even more.

i had a guy at the hydro store willing to give me his duct muffler because it didn't do jack. But thats just one dudes opinoin.

If you can get an inline fan as they are quieter and more effiecnt also that squil cage blowers motors gives off a fare amount of heat its self.

thx! i will search for the inline fan, but whats the CFM required for a 400watt HPS? I am growing in my closet. it is 22' width x 33' lenght x 53' height. I will use a 6' X19' cool tube for the light. i plan on having 10 plants in this little room, each in a 3.5 gal DWC.

my squirrel cage is rated at 465cfm, but you have to think about the ducting reducing some of the cfm, and if you're going to put one of those (worthless) mufflers on them, that'll severely reduce cfms as well. Oh yeah, and the carbon filter.

Go overkill, its always the best way, in my opinion

Here's a pic of a snail fan out of a jenair range hood...NO VIBRATION!!!It's run w/a router speed controler...on high it'll almost IMPLODE the room!!! Bought the hood at a yard sale for $10.00!!

jiboia, it might be better getting a different kind of inline than trying to make that one quiet, you would put one on your exhaust

There is also muffled duct which is duct with batting inside. this can be run that from the fans exhaust to reduce wind noise.

straighter duct will produce a little less the noise. Or perhaps a speed control for the fan.
