I grew up in tick and rattlesnake country and learned as soon as I could walk how to avoid em. But if I had a buck for every tick I've found on myself I could take a nice vacation.
Dress like a cowboy, there was a reason they dressed the way they did.
Wear high-top socks, a T-shirt tucked in, long sleeve over shirts with cuffs buttoned, a bandanna around your neck (yeah like the cowboys used to do), and a hat with a full brim, and boots or Gators over pant legs.
Then check yourself in the shower and in front of a mirror or have somebody else check you after being in the bush.
Ticks hang out on overhanging limbs and are brushed off when critters brush against it. Then they begin crawling to soft, warm fresh like behind your ears, under the arms, back of knees, groin area and lower back where clothing doesn't rub a lot and disturb em. If you peal off your outer layer of clothing and check yourself before getting into your car you will eliminate most of em. Then another thorough check immediately upon getting home.
Now that knot is likely the head of the tick. Them fuckers bury their head into the flesh and it will usually separate if you just pull the body off and infects.
I always carry a small pocket knife with a really pointy blade to dig the head out if they get burrowed in. But it usually takes em awhile to get past your clothing and to a soft spot, so I seldom have to dig em out.
Anyway, when driving in the woods where brush overgrows the roads, keep windows up and arms inside. Walking on trails avoid going through thick brush and brushing against limbs if possible.
I usually find a couple ticks every time I go out, and get a bite or two every year but catch em before they can burrow. It's just all part of the woods like squirrels or bears, annoying but if you pay attention they're rather harmless.
