How Do You Prevent/Treat Tick Bites

One of my plots is so infested with ticks that every time I come back, I have at least 2-3 on me. Ordinarily I'd just pull them off and not worry but this is getting extreme.

I now have 5 very bad looking bites on me and have been present for about 2 weeks now. I'm confident by the chances of contracting Lyme Disease that I've not contracted that yet but if I don't find something to keep them off me. I may not be so lucky in the future.

I've used Deet and about every commercial product around such as Deep Woods Off, etc, etc.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Deet/deep woods/off/etc is completely useless. You have to use pyrethrin.

I wasn't going to say anything but I've pulled 2 directly off my ''sack.''
Now I'm worrying. I have a few of the symptoms listed and 3 of the bites look worse than those pictured. I had initially read that if the ''rash'' doesn't get larger than a dime and is gone in a few days, it's just the saliva causing a reaction.

I guess I need to look up a Dr.

You could try dusting your legs with diatomaceous earth. Suppose to be like razors cutting through their waxy outerlayer, drying them up.

Been meaning to dust the floors of my place, have a bag lying around somewhere. Never actually tried it, but its been raved about enough..

Some people actually work it into the coats of their dogs, got to be careful inhaling that tho (although can't be much worse than all the other shit this world has to offer)

You could also petition the dog companies... "frontline for humans" lol.

It may be in your best interest to go get those looked at. Not trying to worry ya but be safe.

As far as prevention, pyretherin is the only product I have ever found to work. But simple solutions like tucking pant legs into shoes/socks, wearing long sleeved shirts and a hat are quite effective as well. And ticks love tall grasses so stay away if possible.

If I had a tick bite that did anything other then go away immediately I would get checked by a doc.

for some reason, 60% deet is more effective than 100%, according to an informal test I did.

when the deet is working right, the ticks will dance if they land on it.

have you tried skin so soft - smells worse than deet apparently navy seels use lots of it, don't know how many ticks they run into.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I've already committed to going to a Dr. if they don't clear up in the next few days.

I used Skin So-Soft for sand gnats and mosquitoes in Florida and it worked well.

lyme disease is carried by deer ticks, they are tiny compared to regular ticks. but yeah other ticks can carry all kinda other unpleasantness.

I'm surprised there's not more of these threads around, encountering random dangers etc. Ticks suckkkk, I am in the same boat Jack. Are you walking through a lot of tall grass/fields? Around here they are really bad at the beginning of the season.

Thing is I've tried both permethrin and deet. Only 40% deet, and some stuff I got from Bass Pro that contains 5-10% perm. I always used the latter and it didn't seem to do a whole lot, (not supposed to use on skin) but lately the coleman 40% has been doing well. Make sure to tuck your pants into high socks, watch your head/neck. I almost always find one motherfucker, in/on my car, sweatshirt etc. I always check before I leave the site and shower/recheck right after, wash clothes...

If you have any "targets" on you, definitely be concerned. I always put neosporin/anti-biotic on a bite immediately, I have had some bad ones, where I went to a nurse and they were no big deal, for them anyway lol.

Yeah, I kept waiting for someone else to mention ticks and other dangers in the woods. All of the 5 have a ''bulls eye'' but one behind my knee has gotten significantly worse. It's a knot about the size of a walnut under my skin. The others have nearly healed but the one worries me.

I have to cross a field of what I think is wheat. Whatever it is, it's definitely tall grass. I have a series of trails under Hawthorne branches I have to walk under and have always figured that's where I get them.

if a tick bit, and was engorged when removed(filled with blood) you need to go to the doctor and have them prescribe you the antibiotic amoxicillin.

lymes spirochetes remain dormant in the ticks gut until warm fresh blood enters the system of the tick and then is passed through the salivary gland into the human host's blood. takes >24 hours for lymes to be transmitted to human host. don't take the risk though if the tick was even slightly engorged when discovered. lie to the doctor if need be and always say you had the tick for probably 48 hours. the sooner you begin antibiotics the easier to rid the lymes bacteria. deer ticks carry lymes, they are small with black legs. larger brown legged dog ticks do not carry lymes, but do carry other diseases.

To the best of my knowledge, I removed them within a few hours of them getting on me. I've read that they don't actually start feeding for 36 hours after they attach themselves. I had always used a cigarette to make them''unlatch.'' I've read it's best to just pull them off with a pair of tweezers.
They say if you burn them or use nail polish, they inject bacteria through saliva and that increases the likelihood of catching Lyme or other disease.

if they are in you you can remove them by twisting counter clockwise as you pull out. You should be carefull with the heat method as you could burn your bite wound and cause infection much easier.

i get at least a few a day, they never bite in me though, i can usually feel them crawling on me....yuk hate ticks

last year got about 2,3 tics,and this season about 3 tics already-litle bastards...
if you are scared you got infected look fot that usual red-white round marking around the bite,and if you find enything like it -GO TO THE DOCTOR!

used a little bit of soil from outside mixed in with ffof and when i came back from vacation 2 days ago i found a tick on my pot, a big fucker.

I thought it was a random bug so i tried to smash it with my finger to the pot but it just knocked him off the pot on his back on the ground then i saw all his legs and realized it was a tick, it worries the hell out of me there may be more in my room. It too alot of pressure from the nail side of my finger to smash its body, its unbelievable how much pressure it requires to pop the little fuckers. Its the first time ive ever seen a tick in the area of my home.

try cedar oil, if the good stuff doesnt work. Thats what the marines in iraq supposedly use.

The deet article I read said (some) treat the underside of their hat brim. Not sure I want to breath that stuff but I'd treat a full brim 270 degrees.
