How do you get your buds to foxtail?

I've never understood how people get their buds to foxtail. Its looks unreal.

Is it the genetics that get em like that?

Any help would be great.

Some strains do and some don't. It's normally something people try to avoid.

You don't train a bud to foxtail.....it's the strain......I gotta nice foxtail top cola on a Russian Diesel plant in my album.......yea they do look cool

Light leaks have nothing to do with foxtails. Like stated, most of it is strain dependent. One way to get them to do this is raise the heat (90+), lower the humidity and feed them too much bud booster and they are off. Do this at around week 6 of flower and alot of strains will do this. Ask me how I know?

haha they look cool but i think it has something to do with the temperature in the room as well:

try some hybrids - i think it has something to do if a sativa produces kind of indica buds and still expands a little like a sativa
i never had foxtails on pure or very sativa leaning strains

This sativa cheese pheno was right next to an indica pheno with no foxtails, this leads me to believe that its genetic, considering they were under the same conditions

Ok my screen name explains this question, but can someone explain what a "foxtail" even is? I see pics of buds but what am I looking for/at? Thanks!

If you imagine the bud as a group of calyxes together forming the cola, the foxtailing is where you see individual calyxes "climbing" on top of one another above the main cola/bud.

One of my friends doesn't like them because it makes his buds "messy", but I don't really see why it's so undesireable - surely those extra calyxes are extra weight?

Apologies if I'm missing the obvious, I'm a newbie dontchaknow!

I think it's totally unknown by anyone why foxtails happen. They just do. I got quite a few on my last (and first) grow, but nothing too crazy.

They're undesirable because the buds that form out of foxtails have a far higher leaf to calyx ratio (edit: at least in my experience), which means you're smoking more leaf matter (and more chlorophyll's and other such undesirables) than you would if the bud was tighter, with more calyx and less leaf. It also makes the buds more difficult to trim properly. But boy are they beautiful to look at!

I love smoking foxtail buds. Not sure why you think they have lots of leaves, mine don't. They're just stacked calyxes with very little stem connecting them. I can pull off a foxtail and grind it with no de-stemming at all. Very convenient.

Only one phenotype of my DSD selection does the foxtail thing. It's my keeper because it also is the most potent and flavorful, but its tendency to foxtail is a major bonus. The buds are stunningly beautiful.

You can get fox tailing if you leave the lights on longer near the end of the grow.
It's not a desired trait.
It's like whispy buds, no bag appeal.

I don't sell or buy so I'm not familiar with "bag appeal", but people who have seen my foxtail buds tend to drop their jaws. They love the way they look and smoke. "Holy fuck!" and "Wow those are gorgeous!" are common responses.

And no, they're not "whispy", they're as dense as any normal shaped bud I've grown.

I thought foxtail was when they buds form a spiral, like the staircase along the main stem. It happens when the node are spaced out and form one branch say every 2 inches.

I think you're thinking of the term "Cola", facelift.

As for foxtailing, light leaks, sativa genetics, and excessive nutrients late in flowering can lead to foxtailing.

It is not a desired trait because foxtail buds are harder to trim. With a normal, tightly formed nug, you can keep the scissors at a stationary distance from the center of the bud and rotate it as you slice budleaves. Saves time like you wouldn't believe when trimming 1lb+.

Though, I must admit, two of the best strains (more or less indica dominant) in my garden, Honeybee and Dumpster, foxtail like you wouldn't believe.

I have a Northern Lights pheno that makes a nice crown of fox tails at about 9 weeks flower. Nice to look at, definitely increases yield slightly, but a pain in the ass to trim.

I also know high temps can cause some phenos to stretch out its flowers as an attempt at keeping them cool and airy. (Ask me how I know...:wallbash:)
