how do you build a tunnel properly?

in the old days they used to use 6x6's and 8x8's to shore up the sides and roof... typical 2 beans on side and on crossing to tops of the two.

coal mines somtimes have just freestanding 4x4's with shims between the top and roof.

i wouldnt take my advice as construction worthy, but itll send you in the right direction. some soil might not be able to handle a free-standing, unsupported roof. 1" or thicker plywood might be needed to hold the roof up.
good luck.

Oh, what the hell, I'll add to the comic relief here.

I've never done any tunneling, per se, but I used to own a backhoe and I've built a few underground underground rooms and tunnels. At that time, we had access to almost unlimited amounts of 50-year-old Douglas Firs and we'd just fall trees, skin them and use massive timbers for support. I would drive my backhoe over the roof and over the tunnels many times before anyone ever used them.

The easiest thing to do Is to dig a hole and bury something like a shipping container then use corrugated metal conduit for your tunnels. That way, everything is safe.

If you actually do any tunneling, you'd better get someone who really knows the biz to help you out because your life depends on it.

Rent one of those Bobcats, those mini-diggers, buy a used shipping container (not that expensive, probably get one for ~800 euro / 1200 bucks.)
You only need about 6 inches of soil on top for grass to grow there (I've seen houses with living grass on the roof!), but that is still going to be ALOT of dirt to haul away.
Worried about neighbours asking about the huge hole in the ground? Buy a camper or a tent and place it over the hole while you're working there.

My 2 cent...

Bury a shipping container (wrong size) Use culvert for shaft.

OR

Dig hole, build conrete box, backfill. Use culvert for shaft.

OR

Actually tunneling - never recover the cost unless you have fields of poppies or coca down there.

speaking of tunnel digging, you dug up this old thread that was 2.5 years old, dusted it off and resuscitated it back to life

interesting topic though.
