and an easier but less thorough and less pure way to get the little amount of THC that mixed in with all that black gunk is to hit the pipe empty with lots of flame....you get the same short lived dull, dumbing, stone but without all that mucking around with inflammable petrochemicals and the white lab coat

if anyone is putting their pipe into the microwave and
boiling it INSIDE the microwave, then you are probably ruining your microwave!!
most people don't think about it, but many times pipes are fumed with
silver/gold to add fuming/color to pipes......by sticking your pipe in your microwave,
it is like sticking a piece of a fork in there but less intense.....the metal is IN your
pipe and is radiating nuke waves from the pipe often causing the microwave to lose
its ability to heat evenly,creating hot spots in your microwave and essentially ruining it over extended time.... boil the alcohol first,then pour alcohol carefully into the ziploc bag from a measuring cup as to not flash fry your fingers when pouring the boiling alcohol into the ziploc..... then stick the piece in there and shake shake shake!
i use two ziplocs to ensure the one i am shaking doesn't bust all over me...!
also the higher % alcohol you use the better the product, denatured is preferable over the 70%, but if you must use iso then upgrade to 91%...

just thought you guys should think about sticking metal into your mic...
on another note i would be weary of smoking oil made from resin.

Add baking soda and water when seperating into 2 layers. This may require using more hexane.

Well ya'll got me so excited that I just had to try it. I dumped all my bowl cleanings in a fruit jar and poured it about half full of denatured alcohol from my pipe cleaning soak tub.

I shook well and periodically for a couple hours and then added hexane, shook well again and put in a ziploc bag and hung it by the corner for separation.

Once the layers cleared, I snipped off the end of the bag, decanted the layers separately and proceeded with a normal hexane flash off step.

Attached are the pictures of the yield. The oil had an intense lower end but instead of a soaring high, produced more of a stupor.

I find the same - similar to the starting material. Isn't it impressive how the tars stay in the alcohol? I'm very happy with hexane as a solvent in general. It has the selectivity of butane, yet doesn't need to be pressurized at room temperature, and evaps fairly quickly.

On a very large scale, it is difficult, dangerous, and expensive to do BHO. Using denatured alcohol as the primary solvent, one could process plant matter on a 55 gallon drum scale, and then wash that with a liter of hexane for some beautymous oils. Methinks this could be useful around this time outside!

faint resin taste? definitely not preferred to oils from plant matter, but worthwhile in a dryspell?

well...depends on how it was denatured. Most often methanol, which is fine for this procedure, because you're not drinking it. Always do a spot test on a mirror, if unsure. Any residue is no good, for both phases.

Put a few inches of carbon in the top of your tube when extracting. I've heard it does a good job of removing the mercaptions

Thanks for the concern. The denatured alcohol that I used was denatured with methanol, which boils around 149F.

After I went through the above procedure, my standard procedure is to wash the hexane or BHO out of the Pyrex plate with Everclear, add a few drops of water, and then distill that off until bubbling stops in a 230F oil bath.

That process fractionally distills off the 149F boiling point methanol and 154F boiling point hexane before the 172F boiling point Ethanol and 212F water.

While minute amounts will still remain, they are extremely low and LD50 level for Methyl alcohol is actually around 5628 mg/kg.

huh? what do u mean "so concerned", have i been going around asking everyone about this? and no i didnt get into an argument im just wondering because if i make some treats it would b nice to not have to use as much bud if i could use some of this, or just just make them a little more potent.

would this work instead of naptha or hexane? http://www.amazon.com/Bestine-Rubber-Cement-Thinner-orm16/dp/B000HF2L96 it says its n-heptane on the label. i couldnt find any naptha that didnt leave a residue and dont know where to get hexane

Duh! I left out the part about adding the same amount of super saturated salt water.

Dissolve as much table salt in the water as it will hold before adding so as to keep down the emmulsion layer.

Shake well and put in a seperatory funnel. The alcohol and water will tie each other up and the non polar hexane will float on top with the cannabis oil dissolved in it.
