pots will be set on rocks, some single rocks big enough to take a pot, some pots will sit in between rocks, some will sit on a bunch of basketball/soccer ball sizes.....bottoms with integrity are needed
thats wat i thought at first to until i read it is made with Polypropylene wich is the same thing pond liners are made out of only diff is some pond liners are also made with pvc /polyethylene/Polyester the tri flex roofing stuff is a woven polypropylene coated with a layer of U.V. stabilized polypropylene on both sides. So are you sure it wouldnt work as in still breath like the pond liners i just dont get how it can be that much thicker if there pretty much the same thing but i could be wrong very new to this world and just tryin to get the most for my $
It's not a cloth like the grow bag smart pots if that is what you are after. I work with building materials and this stuff is like a heavy tar paper. Unless you are wanting a "bag" like the plastic grow bags, then I would find a fabric more suitable for a "smart pot."
If you have a home depot in the area, I would go check it out in person.
Y'know if outside you really want the bottom of the pot to be touching the earth. That way the media can tap into the ground moisture and the smartpot will act as a bit of a wick.
Ordered a pond liner, it came with a fabric under layer. Pulled out the ol lady's sewing machine and watched a 10 minute utube instructional. Well here it is. It's about 32" x 16" and all i did was folded it in half. Sewed both ends and left the top open like a pillow case. My main concern is balance. There is between 3-4 gallons of coco.
there was a thread (300 clone out or something like that was the title) on here that the grower staked the plant through the bag into the ground to keep the whole shabang stable.
Yeah i have done similar (nice job on the sewing man!)
Get some bamboo stakes or similar and just push them right through and into ground... of course this is very sturdy but does make it more permenant and out holes in the bottom.
My largest plants were grown in home made smart pots. I used the original concept of wrapping the chicken wire with landscaping cloth. I used zip ties and overlapped the cloth. The pots are holding up really really well, and I would presume could be used season after season if left in a good area, and amended seasonally. Heres a HUGE alien#4 BX in my homemade smart pot.
The pics are several weeks old. The plant has almost doubled in size, and is halfway thru flowering..

Thanks Maina for the original Idea. Thanks Obsoul for the genetics, and thank you TexKid aswell. Peace and love.
The moss is there as its basically a very shallow stream bed all winter. The 'smart pot' has been there form over a year and the moss is everywhere down there. Its really amazing how tough this fabric is and resistant to mold.
Just the usual budrot in late flower but no problems with the root area.
Because the top half is always out of water even when its heavy rain. Its great for early veg as the black absorbs what ever sun is around and breathes in hot weather too. There is no mold on the fabric just moss and mud.
bumping an old thread...I live in the north Sonora desert...we get lots of hot days...I'm not concerned about stealth as much as health...would white pots work better than black???
