High Times / High Crimes - Have You Been Ripped-Off?

“To Live Outside The Law, You Must Be Honest”
Bob Dylan

Have you, or someone you know, been ripped-off by High Times magazine?

We’d very much like to hear your story, whether or not the matter was ever resolved.

If you’re not familiar with the ugly business practices of High Times, read this article:

<<<<<<<link removed/terms of use>>>>>>>>>

We are preparing legal action against High Times, Trans High Corporation, and their minions.

Violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and several other charges, will be brought.

They include allegations of fraud, and civil conspiracy, in both the United States, and Canada.

Please PM me your bad dealings with High Times.

Thanks for your time and attention.

I quit reading about 15 yrs. ago, too. Too much hype. At one time it was "the publication"....but with the internet, there's more reliable sources out there.

haven't read that rag in a VERY long time...

I do still have their second issue from 1974,.. Had a picture of a seaplane on the cover..

Also, in their December, 1987 issue, they published a letter I wrote them, in their "Readers Harvest Report" article...

edit: I wasn't expecting them to pay me for that...I sent the letter anonymously...
.. If you happen to read it, let me know...

I ordered seeds from one of their affiliates, BC Bud Depot. At least they were advertised like mad in high times years ago. I bought some expensive seeds too. I wanted to try god bud and decided on a few packs along with half dozen mr. Nice strains, he just released his first new crosses in years. I only received 1 pack of seeds, the g13 x skunk and nothing else. The seeds weren't in a breeders pack and when I grew them out they were some of the worst plants I've ever seen, they were basically hemp and I still haven't tried any god bud :(

I swore off buying seeds from high times and stopped reading the magazine years ago.

Does this have anything to do with HT shitting on the Hawaii Cannabis Cup?

I've already sent them my opinion on the validity of their trademarks.

Did you know HT has trademarked the term "Cannabis Cup"?
But it's not for the reason you might think!
It's trademarked as a FOOD ITEM.
But that is not how they've been abusing the trademark.

They had to trademark Cannabis Cup so that they could also trademark the term "Medical Cannabis Cup", since they already owned "Cannabis Cup" they were granted the rights to trademark that too.

Even though it's NOT acceptable as a trademark because the words "Medical Cannabis Cup" are descriptive and not sufficiently unique, even in combo (imo) to qualify for a trademark.

So if anyone wants to hold their own Medical Cannabis Cup, you better either hand it over to HT or fight them on it...

BTW, anyone wanting to join this suit, please take it to PMs, thanks.

Years ago I ordered a subscription using a Credit Card. When the subscription expired they automatically billed the same card number without telling me. Shady. When the credit card finally expired they tried to bill the card again, but it was expired. Too bad High Times.

...hmm....I figured the "high times canabis cup" was when you ordered some swag from high times, stuffed it in a baggie, and placed it over your groin so that when you punch yourself in the ballz for being such a sucker it wouldn't hurt so bad!

yeah these guys have been just cashing in now for years, they offer the visitors less and less and charge more and more. then all the results are just announced, no transparency. even back when the ht cup was still cool, they were selling the trophies. i have this on very good authority, the horses mouth so to speak. not sure if it's still the same but yeah those cups could be bought at one point. just needed a nice wad of cash.

then you have stories of contributors getting fucked and even blackmailed threatened with authorities.

Of Course ... But ...

Of Course ... But ...

You do realize thats a 1998 case ?

Yes, we're quite aware that the situation described in the CannabisCulture article ( April 7,2001 ) began in 1996.

( The link to it was removed. We were unaware that it was a violation of the T.O.S.. )

Unfortunately, not much has changed at High Times since those days. ( Although the rip-off lawyer who was the majority owner died a few months ago. )

High Times has flat-out stolen material that they originally published under "one time use" contracts, and were originally with the authors name, the phrase "all rights reserved" and the copyright notice, staring them in the face! Those images, and the copyright notices, are visible plain as day on their own website!

They cropped-out the names of the photographers and writers, and republished them full-page in their most recent book.

They have refused to pay, and have demanded that the artists prove that they didn't sign their rights away. That's legally ass-backwards, they they know it.

When they were caught red-handed, they were given the opportunity to make it right, and pay the going rate ( which amounted to several thousand dollars ).

Instead, they insulted two of their longest standing contributors, including their first International Correspondent.

Each of their violations of Federal Law carries a substantial statutory penalty: $140,000.

We intend to make them pay every dime of it.

Not sure why you want to bring this here ... most of us havent paid much attention High Times in a good long time. We are here to grow some pot not deal with HT drama. Cant imagine anyone having a bone to pick with them unless it was some sort of commercial venture ... in that case whats it got to do with us ?
