Lunker chomps on boy's ankle in Lake Calhoun

A nine-year-old Minneapolis boy had a close encounter of the muskie kind.

Paris Copeland was splashing in Lake Calhoun on Memorial Day when something chomped on his ankle.

His mother, Westy Copeland, says "Blood was just gushing."

Paris had an inch-long gash and three teeth marks on his leg. The boy says he didn't see what bit him - he "just felt a lot of pain."

The family was told it probably was a muskellunge or a tiger muskie - a muskie-northern hybrid.

Both species grow up to four feet or longer and have been stocked in Lake Calhoun and other Twin Cities lakes.

DNR regional fisheries manager Daryl Ellison says serious fish bites are rare.

Yeah, I was hoping to see a picture of the bite marks. But I did google muskellunge and tiger muskie and :yoinks: :yoinks:!! I would hate to stumble on that fish while swimming. If you find anymore pictures of this kid feel free to post em!

Heres the follow up story..

There are a lot of cool things about being a kid in Minnesota, not the least of which is taking a swim in any one of our great lakes.

Paris Copeland got his wish for a swim last Monday at Lake Calhoun. He went with his family and said he spent almost all of his time in the water.

He had no idea that his ideal day would turn into the day he'd like to forget.

"There was tons of blood," Paris said.

Seems a big fish, most likely a muskie or northern pike, took a bite out of Paris, mistaking his leg for lunch.

"I felt pain and I run back to my parents and then, we went home," Paris remembered.

Paris' mom recalls the situation too, and feels bad that her family caused quite the ruckus on the beach.

"I wonder how many people we freaked out," Westy Copeland said, "it was like jaws."

But what scared the heck out of this family shouldn't scare you out of the water.

Ron Schara of Minnesota Bound says this is not something we need to worry about.

"This is such a rare event; it's certainly not worth staying out of the water," Schara said.

The big fish of Lake Calhoun, and 20 other city lakes, is the muskie. It can grow to 30 pounds or more, it has razor sharp teeth and a pretty nasty disposition. But, its prey isn't usually people. A bite like this is very rare.

"This fish is just cruising along looking for something to eat and saw the flash of an ankle and thought it was time to eat and went bam!," Schara said.

A fish's split second chomp for lunch almost changed the mind of Paris Copeland about swimming but after three days his scar isn't as much of a pain as it is a trophy.

"Maybe he'll be a fisherman and he can just brag about this for the rest of his life," Schara hoped.

They said they caused a ruckus on the beach, a bit scary, like jaws???? Um, if a kid came screaming and bleeding out of the lake I wouldn't flip out. Unless he came out missing a leg of course....But those little bites? I mean, that sucks and all, but shit. Just a fish or maybe some barbed wire under the water, no need to go crazy. I mean, if I was the boy, I would flip out. But not if I was just somebody else watching.

Shit, I get pretty nervous in East Texas Lakes. I have seen what you can pull out of the water around there.

Alligator Gar, I believe. Was taken with a bow and arrow rig too, in Sam Rayburn Lake. 8 foot 2 inches, 244.5 lbs.

You ought to see some of the Sturgeon they pull out of the Snake River in Idaho. The legal limit is anything over 6'.

as a kid my dad and grandpa used to like to go muskie fishing in minnesota, the best way to describe one is like a freshwater barracuda. after going with once, i was hooked too. these fish fight like a mother fucker, man it can wipe ya out to catch one. they get big and strong and can run hard and fast and jump, they arent too good for eating though.
