Okay I wanted to show you all kind of what I'm looking at. See these are not just shots for me to show off, although that's a nice added bonus. These are also for me to evaluate harvest.

Since I'm nearing harvest this is an important time to check frequently. Now I know from growing the mother's that they take about 8 weeks, although often times clones can take less also the breeder description puts my strain at 8 weeks of flowering so at 7 weeks I know to be looking and evaluating the triches. Let's say though you are growing an unknown strain. Then you need to look for physical cues such as no new pistil or other growth. Existing pistil are changing color (often to a brown, red or orange) in general the plant seems less healthy as it if it's dying off (because it is you know, although a plant can be reverted back to veg). The triches have gone from a very white or icey looking coating to more of a tinted one, kind of like the buds are lightly toasted (at least that's how it seems to me). These are outward signs of maturity and signal a good time to start checking triches to pinpoint harvest.

Now what is the right time is a matter of taste and what you want from your smoke. In simple terms you could say that clear triches are unripe or approaching ripeness, cloudy triches are at the peak of ripeness and amber triches are getting over ripe. The thing is, in the case of marijuana, over ripe may actually produce results some find desireable. Basically weed with lots of amber triches when smoked gives you what people call a couchlock buzz. This is a narcotic type of high that tends to be felt strongly in the body in the form of a sort of weakness or tiredness. They call it couchlock because it's the type of stone that if you are sitting in a couch you will likely stay there and not want to do much else. Some people like or even prefer this type of high so for them they may want to wait until 50% or even more of the bud's triches are amber although in my opinion above 50% is getting too over ripe and there is a point where it will start to break down too much. Also people who like to use marijuana for pain releif like to get more amber because what it breaks down to is actually a very effective anti-inflamatory making it alot like tylenol or motrin which are also anti-inflamatories. <excuse possibble spelling errors>

Now there is also what is called the heady high which comes from weed that has mostly cloudy triches with a small mix of maybe clear and amber as well. This kind of high is said to be euphoric or even trippy and energetic is also used to describe it. People often say it's they kind of high that after you smoke a joint you want to go do something even if it's just to clean house. Some people find the heady high makes them feel edgy or paranoid more. It's also the kind of high that makes your mind work and it's not unusual to find yourself drawn to philosophical discussions or political debates which is likely why many of these sites have such forums. You may also find it stimulates your creativity giving you lots of ideas. This is the kind of high I prefer :D I fortunately don't seem to be bothered by the paranoia like some and I sit around enough as it is, I don't want a smoke that will make me sit more. :)

Anyway what I have are a series of pics, one of a bud and then one of the triches of that bud. I will describe what I'm seeing so you can get an idea of what I'm looking at. I'll start these in the next post, In the meantime here is a bud shot of the best cola in the garden. I was unable to get a decent trich shot so I don't want to group it with the others. It's about 9 inches long and around 10" around the bud, not including secondary buds.

Okay in this one I see little to no amber and about 30% clear and about 60% cloudy, this bud is getting there but not ready yet.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud2b.jpg

This one I also see no amber but it looks like about 80 to 90% cloudy and 10-20% clear, this one appears closer to being done but still not quite there.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud3b.jpg

This one I see a few amber but mostly cloud and clear. Id say maybe 70% cloudy, 28% clear and about 2% amber. Still not ready but getting there.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud4b.jpg

Again I see a little amber but mostly cloudy and some clear, I'd call this one about 77% cloudy, 20% clear and 3% amber. Again close but not yet.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud5b.jpg

This one I see as about the same as the last one, needing a bit more time at 80% cloudy, 17% clear, 3% amber.

This one has almost no amber, I'd put it at 70% cloudy, 29% clear, 1% amber, again close but no blunt. :joint:

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud7b.jpg

This one I'm not spotting any amber in, I'll estimate it at 70% cloudy, 30% clear. Again, not ready yet.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud8b.jpg

Again I see no amber but maybe a bit more cloudy, I'll call this one 75% cloudy 25% clear. again not ready though.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud9b.jpg

Once again I see no amber but this one seems to have more cloudy, I'll put it at 85% cloudy 15% clear, also not ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud10b.jpg

This one I see some amber so I'll put it at 80% cloudy, 16% clear and 4% amber.

This one I see a little amber, I'll call it 70% cloudy, 28% clear and 2% amber, also not ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud12b.jpg

This one didn't turn out too well most of the triches are blurred so I'm guessing but I'll also put it at 70% cloudy, 28% clear and 2% amber, also not ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud13b.jpg

This one too I see a bit of amber so I'm calling this one 80% cloudy, 18% clear and 2% amber, this one too isn't quite ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud14b.jpg

This one I'm not seeing any amber and would say it's 80% cloudy and 20% clear, also not ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-52-Bud15b.jpg

And finally, this one I also see no amber and would rate it 80% cloudy and 20% clear.

In closing I want to explain a little about how I see clear, cloudy and amber. Clear is pretty straight forward, it looks like clear ice sort of. Cloudy is les obvious there is cloudy that is milky white which is pretty obvious but there is also a semi transparent cloudy that I count as cloudy. Amber is like this too there is a sort of cloudy amber that looks like a faint tan which is all I saw in the pics and then there is a dark yet more clear looking aber which I think of as being more broken down then the lighter amber but I count both as amber.

Hopefully this will help those confused by the trich colors to harvest better but there is no hard fast rule. If you are new to growing or to a strain you really also need to take samples to smoke to really know what's best for you. In time though you'll develope a better sense and eventually a quick glance will be all you'll need to decide.

Nice looking buds as usual my friend. I really like the pics....

Thanks JJ, I'm constantly finding myself amazed by how good the pics are coming out of this camera. It's funny because I settled on this camera when I couldn't find the model I originally wanted. I thought at the time I would be disappointed but this camera just seems to keep getting better. I guess it's me that's really just getting better with the camera. :D

thanks to answer my question HempKat.

great info about trics and harvesting time !! you did great work.

You killin me of taking this photos from old coolpix, Ive thinked that those are from SLR. also your coolpix has good macro focus - 1cm.

Your girls are looking beauty, I dont know how about streaching but when we look on the trics the girls are pretty stable.

how do you setup your cam to get macros ? iso etc..

great thread,
peace

There is a function on my camera called macro mode. Then there are things called screen assistant's and there's one for macro mode. So you put it in macro mode, go to the screen assist menu and set it for macro mode, then you put it in screen assist mode and you point the camera, let it auto focus and if the lights good you get an indicator that notifies you of this and you take the pic. I do not adjust ISO or shutter speeds or any of that stuff, I have no idea how to. The most critical thing is the light, blue light works better but whatever it is you want it bright but not too bright. If it's too bright it will detect the flash is not needed and those almost always come out looking badly.

Honestly it is a coolpix, I don't even know what SLR means I just know it was once considered professional level photographic stuff years ago.

Okay well the other day when I was doing those trich shots I just did a few plants because I know they are all going to be close being clones started at the same time under the same conditions. I also knew I would likely have to do this a few times so I figured I could do different plants at different times.

So here is a continued trichome analysis with a different selection of buds, and these are now at day 54.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud1a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud1b.jpg

This one is close to where I like it I'd call it about 90% cloudy and 10% clear, a few more days and she should be ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud2a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud2b.jpg

This one too shows no sign of amber and looks to be about 90% cloudy and 10% clear so angain it should be ready very soon.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud3a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud3b.jpg

This one I'm seeing a little bit of amber so I'll call it 80% cloudy, 19% cleas and 1% amber again not quite ready yet.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud4a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud4b.jpg

This one like the first few I see no amber and it looks to be around 90% cloudy and 10% clear, again close but not yet.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud5a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud5b.jpg

Again, like the last, no amber, 90% cloudy and 10% clear, also not quite ready.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud6a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud6b.jpg

This one too, I see no amber, 90% cloudy and 10% clear so it also needs just a wee bit longer.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud7a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud7b.jpg

This once didn't turn out too well and most of the triches are too blurry to read. I do see a bit of amber so I'll guesstimate this one at 80% cloudy 15% clear and 5% amber. Also very close but not just yet.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud8a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud8b.jpg

This one is probably done although I'll let it go until tomorrow as that is a watering day and I prefer to harvest on watering day when the soil is dryer. I see this one as being 90% cloudy, 5% clear, 5% amber.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud9a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud9b.jpg

This one also appears ready as it also looks like 90% cloudy, 5% clear, 5% amber. Which is not surprising since it is on the same plant which yes, is definately coming down tomorrow now that two look the same.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud10a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud10b.jpg

This one looked better to me at this range rather then closer up but I did look at it closer and would call this one 85% cloudy, 12% clear and 3% amber, this one could go a bit longer.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud11b.jpg

This one looks ready and I'd call it about 95% cloudy, 3% clear and 2% amber. I'm not sure as this one is one the same plant as the last bud, I may wait but may take it tomorrow, I'll have to make that call when I take the other one down.

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud12a.jpg

9652C-99-Clones-Week-7-Day-54-Bud12b.jpg

This one was also not a very good shot for judging triches, I'll call it 85% cloudy 10% clear and 5% amber. Well that's it for now. Time to go spark up a phatty. :joint:

man lucky you.. seems like your gona have a good ass summer

Well, actually I will but not because of this crop, heck it won't even be ready to properly enjoy until almost Labor Day. What makes this a good summer is that thru sites like these I managed to figure out how to safely, securely, stealthily and most important affordably maintain a closet sized growspace capable of producing enough in one crop to hold me for a year. This created a situation where I could reasonably do two or three such crops in a year, more if I wanted to push it. That gives me the luxury of having a stash big enough to allow me extended breaks. So yes I am going to have a good summer, not tied to a watering schedule or the need to tend a garden and all the while have all the smoke I need with alot more ready on Labor Day. That is the power the knowledge on these sites has given me. So no it's not luck, it's the reward for a little patience, a bit of investment, an honest desire, and all in all, not that much labor. You or anyone else can have the exact same things if your situation allows it and you apply yourself. I figured out what I would spend if I bought at current prices. I'd have to restrict my intake from what it is now and it would still cost me around $150 a month. In a years time that is $1800. I spent approximately $1500 on lights equipment, supplies, and building a custom grow room. An additional $300 on my camera. So there's $1800. My first indoor crop of 5 plants sustained me for about 6 months. By then I had another crop ready to harvest which due to the misfortune of males was only 6 instead of the 10 to 15 intended. Still those 6 yielded enough to hold me almost another year. By then another crop was harvesting and this time I did a batch of clones right behind it which will allow me to take the summer off and not battle heat issues and mites and all the other typical indoor problems one gets during the summer. The thing is for two years now I have not had to even think of buying and nor will I have to for another year which of course by then I'll be growing again, hopefully :) But that's $3600 not spent plus another $1800 I won't have to spend this year. Basically my investment has paid itself off in savings, several times over.

God you got to love the internet, a place where the relatively free-flow of ideas can still be exchanged between people allowing each to decide what's interesting or meaningful to them. :D
