Okay I wanted to show you all kind of what I'm looking at. See these are not just shots for me to show off, although that's a nice added bonus. These are also for me to evaluate harvest.
Since I'm nearing harvest this is an important time to check frequently. Now I know from growing the mother's that they take about 8 weeks, although often times clones can take less also the breeder description puts my strain at 8 weeks of flowering so at 7 weeks I know to be looking and evaluating the triches. Let's say though you are growing an unknown strain. Then you need to look for physical cues such as no new pistil or other growth. Existing pistil are changing color (often to a brown, red or orange) in general the plant seems less healthy as it if it's dying off (because it is you know, although a plant can be reverted back to veg). The triches have gone from a very white or icey looking coating to more of a tinted one, kind of like the buds are lightly toasted (at least that's how it seems to me). These are outward signs of maturity and signal a good time to start checking triches to pinpoint harvest.
Now what is the right time is a matter of taste and what you want from your smoke. In simple terms you could say that clear triches are unripe or approaching ripeness, cloudy triches are at the peak of ripeness and amber triches are getting over ripe. The thing is, in the case of marijuana, over ripe may actually produce results some find desireable. Basically weed with lots of amber triches when smoked gives you what people call a couchlock buzz. This is a narcotic type of high that tends to be felt strongly in the body in the form of a sort of weakness or tiredness. They call it couchlock because it's the type of stone that if you are sitting in a couch you will likely stay there and not want to do much else. Some people like or even prefer this type of high so for them they may want to wait until 50% or even more of the bud's triches are amber although in my opinion above 50% is getting too over ripe and there is a point where it will start to break down too much. Also people who like to use marijuana for pain releif like to get more amber because what it breaks down to is actually a very effective anti-inflamatory making it alot like tylenol or motrin which are also anti-inflamatories. <excuse possibble spelling errors>
Now there is also what is called the heady high which comes from weed that has mostly cloudy triches with a small mix of maybe clear and amber as well. This kind of high is said to be euphoric or even trippy and energetic is also used to describe it. People often say it's they kind of high that after you smoke a joint you want to go do something even if it's just to clean house. Some people find the heady high makes them feel edgy or paranoid more. It's also the kind of high that makes your mind work and it's not unusual to find yourself drawn to philosophical discussions or political debates which is likely why many of these sites have such forums. You may also find it stimulates your creativity giving you lots of ideas. This is the kind of high I prefer I fortunately don't seem to be bothered by the paranoia like some and I sit around enough as it is, I don't want a smoke that will make me sit more.
Anyway what I have are a series of pics, one of a bud and then one of the triches of that bud. I will describe what I'm seeing so you can get an idea of what I'm looking at. I'll start these in the next post, In the meantime here is a bud shot of the best cola in the garden. I was unable to get a decent trich shot so I don't want to group it with the others. It's about 9 inches long and around 10" around the bud, not including secondary buds.
