I'm going to paint mine so it looks nicer than just plain wood.

Yes. I used zero VOC Latex flat white scrubable. Works great. Also, concerning fire-if you thinks wood's bad, how fast do you think a tent will burn to the point of being a total loss except maybe the frame? And toxic fumes out the ying yang. -granger
