hi should i keep the light 10 inches away because when i put it about 8 inches away the light drys up the top of my soil pretty fast ? how far could i keep the light if i have a 4 foot long 2 foot wide and 6 foot high closet thats all white in the inside and im running 150 watt hps and its in december weather is like 60 degrees inside . not sure temps inside but i can feel a little heat if i put my hand under the hps . but i have a fan blowing the heat away .

then water more often! :D it drying up fast would probably promote faster root growth. it would be more of a hassle. however, it would be more than worth the effort if you move the light even closer, to 5 inches, pending how big of a foot print you need (how much light/many plants the light should to hit), providing a bigger fan.

If they are only seedlings I would keep the lights about 12- 16 inches away until they get some size to them. Have you got them in 16 ounce cups right now. If you do, just water lightly until the bulk up a bit. This will get the roots looking for water and get them growing....

a 150 can be kept fairly close to the plants even in seedling stage. The rule of thumb is to stick your hand under the lamp so that the back of your hand is facing the bulb. If it's too warm to hold your hand there it's too warm for the plants.

As for watering - get a feel for how the planter feels full of dry dirt - when your plants reach that weight it's time to water.

If the surface is drying out too fast a layer of hydroton (those expanded clay balls) on the surface of the soil will help.

Also could be just too dry in the air. A couple of dishes of water in a closet will effectively raise the humidity inside. Seedlings will love the extra humidity - get rid of them when flower starts - buds want to be dry.

i think 12 inches is too far away for my young plants . i have a 150 watt hps in a 4 foot long closet space thats 2 foot wide and 6 foot high . i can adjust the hight by the inches . i put myhand under the hps and feel warm heat but i have a fan blowing on the hps . dont know if this is proper venting . i think its really warm . is warm good or bad . because i can put my hand right under the hps and juss feel heat . sorta like a heater blowing at your hand and is warming your hand up

kinfolk,

I agree 12 inches is too far.

If your hand is warm but comfortable like you could keep it there for the next 12 hours, then your plants will be fine. Just keep an eye on them in the first few hours after you lower the light, ok?

As for the 150 in your closet - I grew 6 or so crops under a 150 - two each time plants hydro DWC with scrog in this cabinet right here. Each crop averaged 3oz or more. Add a veg cabinet or a ready supply of clones from somewhere and you're harvesting every 8-9 weeks.

If you want to maximize the 150 do a search on a guy by the handle of prenda - he grows in Czech - does this thing with 4 plants in a vertical scrog pulling easy 5-6 oz every three weeks. Check his setup out. You could easily fit one into your closet.

Please click the link below in my signature that says 150 club and stop by - there's plenty of happy knowledgeable helping people to answer your questions and help you with your grow.

Here is a pic of this guys setup... imo those lights are too close to your seedlings, Just like last week when you burned your first set of plants... get a flouresent shop light and start your shit then switch to hps.

yeah here is the link to the czech site - obviously this is in czech but the concept is pretty apparent.

a veg chamber can be pretty small - here's mine - it was a $12 cabinet at walmart and is 11.5"x11.5" by 24" tall. I'm using a pc (pci slot fan) for exhaust and airmovement. Two 20 watt daylight cfls. I actually like this chamber the best because it stays nice and warm with ambient down in the mid 60s which is what the big cabinet wants.

you can clone a clone so as you put a plant into flower you take clones off of it and by the time you harvest you should have a well vegged clone.

oh ok - I see now I missed his post that was only 1 week old - yeah floros would be a better choice right now. also I think he'd be better off with smaller containers (beer cups) not big gallon jugs for now.

i've got smaller containers in there now . im raiseing the 150 watt hps to see if that will do anything .what i believe is that you can sprout seeds with the light 10 inches away then thats how far you should keep the lights
