Help me figure this out!

I have to figure out how to get electricity through this door, and still have the door close all the way. Dont want to cut through the wall.

I see that the exterior opening is picture framed with a 1x4. If you also have wood trim around the inside of the frame, remove one leg (vertical piece of trim) from opposing sides. There should be clearance on one side or the other ( left/right). If not drill a hole through the cripple (2x4 next to the aluminum sliding door frame. Pack fibreglas into any openings as an air stop.

If you have no trim/molding on the inside wall, (picture frame) go to the floor and 2 inches to side of the door frame, drill your hole 3 1/2 inches above the floor. This will clear the 2x4 mud sill/plate and most of the nails. Touch up is very easy with drywall mud or spackle. Drill from the inside to avoid damaging the drywall.

When you decide to end your grow, replace the trim/molding. That easy.

Use a twist drill as you will no doubt encounter nails.

ThereIsHope, his key words were no holes through the wall, this suggestion precludes this as it will be behind trim, no doubt.

Personally, I would do it your way, simple, clean and easy to plug BUT he wants No Holes, life can be made complicated, all because of a Hole. LOL

Another option is to leave everything in place and just drill a 1/4" hole (just large enough to pull romex wire) through the exterior 1"x4" picture framed slider door and through the interior wall.

No wood needs to be removed.

Just wood patch and paint the exterior and drywall putty/spackle the interior afterword.

ThereIsHope--------considering the alternative I gave him, he will drill a hole as you suggested. 1/2" hole works better for pulling Romex through, no binding/pinching.

Romex is just slightly over 1/4" but not quite 1/2" in width. A slightly overbored 1/4" hole will do. The smaller the hole, the better.

He could go with individually stranded and insulated wire as well (12 awg for instance) so the hole could be 1/4" easily.

Zip ties can be used as well to keep his wiring together.

There are a couple of ways to do this I guess is my suggestion here. Removing the 1"x4" could be a pain in the ass if not done carefully and requires more skill.

The thread starter did not not want to "cut" into his wall so boring a small hole is the next best option.

Here is another option. :rasta:

I will assume there is a patio light somewhere adjacent this slider glass door.

The brother can fish his electrical wiring through and behind the baseplate of the exterior patio fixture and drill through the drywall.

Doing it this way only leaves one hole and it will be drywall spackle time when done.

No exterior holes at all going this route.
