Help - light smelling like burnt rubber?

Hi Math,

The first idea would be that its on fire and the place is going down! That's just because of the paranoia. lol

Is this the first time its been fired up, new ballast?

Check to see if the smell is comming from the ballast. Sometimes they smell funny for a day or two, like burning rubber. Its a real powerful smell right? Some of the components inside the ballast need to acclimate to the heat inside the ballast. Want to say the coating on the wires, but not sure.

Just to be safe you can:

-Touch or feel the ballast to determine if its overheating
-Observe through the ventilation slits on the ballast if anything seems to be glowing as in real hot.
-Look and see if you see smoke being emitted from the ballast.

You could also open the ballast up to see if anything looks burnt or not in place if you are a handy type person, but just observe don't try to get fancy unless you know what you are doing.

Hope this helps, most likely the smell will go away in a short time. Its always best to be extra safe, just so you can feel more confident about things and learn.

Not sure about these homebox's, sry.

I would close it up tight and let that puppy burn.

I mean not really burn but let it get hot as hades to get rid of whatever it is that needs to stink up the place.

Wouldn't use it till I smelled no smell, but that's just me.

damn, that sucks! So you think its from the reflector huh? What kind of reflector is it? Anyway you can post pics? Its hard to just keep guessing ya know.

Is it a batwing reflector? A metal one? Sometimes they have a plastic film to protect during shipping so they dont get scratched....? I dunno, hard to tell without seeing/smelling/touching ya know?

try to throw up a pic or two, doesn't sound good.

yep it's most likely some plastic that was on the reflective insert inside the reflector.... I had a different aircooled reflector from htg and never even saw the clear plastic film until I had my light's exhaust tube fall off the light and it heated up. EXACT same smell you describe. You might want to check the top of the bulb or glass for drips of plastic but it definately sounds like the same problem.

The messed up part is that there is no mention on any of the packaging or stuff that comes with the reflector and it is almost impossible to see unless you are already looking for it. Good luck, happy growing.

most reflective materials come w/ a plastic covering to avoid scratches.
my $$$ is on the plastic burning.
good luck peeling it off now that you burnt it on there.

I did this with my first Cool Tube. As soon as I saw the thread title I knew what it was :spank:

To the OP:
Youll probably notice the internal reflector turning brown from the plastic melting. Sucks but its a learning experience and you're definitely not alone in learning that lesson. Do not continue to use the burnt internals. It'll rob you of so many lumens its not funny. Unfortunately youll probably have to buy a new reflector assembly. I was unable to buy the internal reflector separately. They just don't sell them...
