Hawk's Outdoor THC Bomb Clones - Grow Journal - August 2023

Strain: THC Bomb - Feminized
Hybrid: 50/50 (even though it’s listed as Indica Dominant)
Current Stage: Started Clones on 8/11/23.
Indoor / Outdoor: Will grow Outdoors in soil

8/11/23 - The Grodan 1.5” x 1.5” Rockwool Starter Cubes arrived this week. Will try my hand at taking cuttings and praying that they’ll take root. Trying just the THC Bomb since I still have more Granddaddy Purple and Peanut Butter Cookie seeds.

Took two cuttings from the THC Bomb. Pruned away all the extra stems and cut the remaining leaves. Cut the stems at a sharp angle and gently scraped the bottom stems before applying rooting powder. Placed the stems at an angle into the rockwool starter cubes to give the stems even more exposure to the cubes. Placed them on a heating mat and under a humidity dome. Made sure the vents on the dome are closed for now. Turned on the LED wand lights. Not sure if I’ll go 18/6 or 24/0 for the lights. Hopefully, I’ll get roots growing out of the starter cubes in a week or so.

Does this sound about right?
Or do I need to change anything up?

8/14/23 - Had been turning the heating mat on/off the last couple days. But unplugged it yesterday as it was reading way too hot and don’t want to cook the plants. I’m removing the humidity dome for about 20 minutes two times / day right now. Both clones look pretty good to me.

Thoughts on lights? I only have a weak LED wand light over the humidity dome. I've been keeping it on 24/0. Should I switch it to 18/6 instead?

8/15/23 - Any and all comments, advice, insight, suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated.

I'm very much a newbie trying to learn how to grow.
This is my first attempt at clones.

Thanks in advance!

8/16/23 - Continue to remove the humidity dome twice a day for 20 minutes at a time. The new propagation tray w. 7” humidity dome arrived tonight. Will set it up soon. Today is Day 5 and supposed to start opening the dome vents a little bit everyday going forwards.

8/17/23 - Set up the new tray. The tray is perfect for the clones – the rockwool cubes fit snugly into it. But the seedlings in the small pots don’t come close to fitting. Since the dome is tall enough, I’ve just put the seedlings on top of the tray and there is still a lot of room. Opened the vents a tiny bit and put the weak LED lights over it.

Turned the heating mat on for a couple hours, but then had to turn it off when I noticed that once again, it was getting way too hot in the dome. I thought that since the plants were a couple levels up from the mat, it wouldn’t be too bad. Wrong. If I use the heating mat again, it will probably be for less than an hour at a time.

8/18/23 - Both look like they’re doing well. No roots poking out of the rockwool cubes yet. Added some rain water to the bottom tray. Still in the humidity dome, but I’ve opened them up a tiny bit.

8/20/23 - Still in the humidity dome. Added some rainwater to the bottom tray. They appear to be doing well. One of the clones has a couple roots starting to grow out of the rockwool cube. So, staying the course for now. Will start opening the vents a bit more each day.

8/21/23 - Opened the humidity dome vents a little more. Added rainwater to the bottom tray. The roots on the one clone grew a LOT since yesterday. The other one still doesn’t have roots growing thru the cube yet.

8/22/23 - Still in humidity dome. But with the vents open more, not sure how much humidity it’s actually keeping in. But has to be more than without the dome. They’re both looking good. LOTS of roots on clone1. Still nothing on clone2. Will have to figure out when to transplant them into one gallon fabric grow pots. And also when I can place them outside for sunlight instead of the weak LED lights?

8/23/23 - Still in humidity dome. Removed dome for about 1.5 hours. Didn’t see any negative reactions w. the clones. Misted the rockwool cubes to make sure they’re still moist. Misted the dome and placed it over the tray again. The weak LED wand lights are still on 24/0 and they appear to be fine w. it.

Ok, am I crazy or are both clones forming buds? Is it possible that they’ve gone from Veg to Flower while trying to root in the cubes?

At what point should these be transplanted into 1 gallon fabric grow pots (3 gallon?) and moved outside?

you're gonna need to spend a lot more time reading here.
but basically if you put them outside now. you arent gonna get much more than a dime bag.

ideally they need to reveg. they have already entered flowering. reveg means they revert and grow up bigger.

sorry for the shitty news. clones can be a bit tricky and you have to keep a good eye on the calendar to figure out when they need to go outside.... early June

(unless by chance you are in the southern hemisphere?)

Thanks for the input @midwestkid !! Greatly appreciated. Don't live in the S. Hemi. I'm in N. VA. Still quite hot out here. I realize it is extremely late in the season, but I was pruning the plants and figured my choice was tossing the cuttings out or trying to clone them. Since I'm a newbie, I thought that it would be fun to get some cloning practice.

Crazy that they're in flower. Is there a way to reveg them if I don't have a grow tent and was planning on putting them outside? The mother plant is outside and started to flower after I took the cuttings.

Thanks again!

8/24/23 - Took the humidity dome off for 2 hours. Misted the rockwell cubes to make sure they were moist. Clone1 has lots and lots of roots. Think it’s ready to transplant into either a one or 3 gallon fabric grow pot. Clone2 still has No roots showing. But it still looks healthy. No idea why the radical difference between Clone1 & 2. Wonder if I should transplant Clone2 at same time as Clone1 regardless of roots??

8/25/23 - Took the humidity dome off. Misted rockwell cubes. Clone2 FINALLY has a root poking thru the cube. Think I’ll transplant both clones into 3 gallon fabric grow pots tomorrow and bring them outside. Ok or a mistake?

Noticing a lot of markings on the leaves. Looked at it under a magnifier, but didn’t see anything. Think I’ll douse these two with some Captain Jack’s Dead Bug spray just in case.

I see you have one of tentacle lights for the clones. Are they any good?

I've been told that they aren't really very good. Very weak. I think it's ok for seedlings and maybe even clones, but I'd look for a better option. I only have this one because my wife was using it for veggie seedlings. But I am a newbie, so hopefully others w. more experience will chime in...

8/26/23 - Took them out of the propagation tray to transplant them. Clone2 has a handful of roots poking out of the cube now. Clone1 has a TON of long roots. Mixed up some Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil w. perlite and filled a couple 3 gallon fabric grow bags. Transplanted both clones and watered them. Leaving them outside since I don’t have a proper light to keep them inside. Hopefully, they survive all the shock they’ve been hit with today!

8/27/23 - Even though outside now, I’m still trying to keep them out of direct sunlight for a little bit. Should I be giving the clones any nutrients at this point? If so, do I give them GeoFlora Veg or Bloom? Also, seeing issue w. the leaves. Figure it has to be some sort of insect, but didn’t see any when looked at the leaf under a mag glass. Is there any problem with spraying them down with Captain Jack’s Dead Bug spray at this point?
