Crichton is a notorious quack / hack / popularizer of pseudoscience.
gell-mann was a theorist, not an experimentalist, he hypothesized the quark model, he didn't discover it. that distinction belongs to experimental physicist Jerry Friedman (rip) who you might have encountered during your time at MIT. frankly i doubt that gell-mann and crichton were anything beyond passing acquaintances.
