So I don't even know what I just went and did done.

I just bought these 120mm pc fans.

Just to clarify, it was a pretty uneducated buy I guess. I went with what I thought was right, but all of these extra cpu power supply wires and shit be throwing me off..

Anyway, I guess I just ruined one because I cut out the power supply...of course the red/black wires aren't copper...

So did I just waste a fan? Do I need some sort of bullshit adapter? What can I do better next time?

there in the last pic i see it has wires in place.. it must work with a 12v dc power supply. red +/black -

So what's your problem?

a laptop charger is way too powerfull for those fans. you just need a 12v 500-1000 mA dc power supply.

On my fan there was 3 wires and on my 12 volt cord there was 2... i just tried different combos till it turned on.... and you gotta make sure your using a 12v adapter or lower... I got one fan to work on a 6v

I guess what I have it wired to at the moment is too small?

Did I need those bigger wires?

The red and black fan wires were originally plugged into that adapter with the 2 blacks, 1 red, and 1 yellow. I pulled the red and black out of that adapter piece and just put them to the charger. No power.

Must be a pussy charger. But for output it does say 12.0v...

@Cyber9: Usually that third wire (speedcontrol wire) is yellow. And fans work on lower power adapters, but at a lower speed.

@immaculate: It's ok what you did. Those bigger wires are only to connect the fan to the computer on a HDD power plug.
Maybe your adapter doesn't work. Test it on something.. or test the fan on another adapter..

Good luck!

Damn, it was the charger. Thought I had wasted 10 bones.

These little pussy things can barely power these fans.

But wait, I am confused.

On selecting a charger to convert, what am I looking for in terms of input/output?

The fan works on a charger with an input rated at 100-240v and an output of 5.1v but not one with the same input and a higher output..i dont get it.

The amps also couts, but I dubt that 12v charger you have has such a small power that will not spin your fan. Maybe it doesn't work.

I think you find your power needs in amps on the fan to know exactly how much power it will need, but usually 500 mA to 1000 mA is ok. 12 V dc of course.. but will also work on lower voltage (slower).

So if I took too much power too it and it popped and smoked for a split second when I plugged it in, is it burnt and trashed?

If you fan's input is 5.1V that need's to be the output of the charger/converter
Are you sure that fan is 5.1v?

Yeah.. if it worked for a little time and then smoked and doesn't work anymore... it's burnt.
