If you use grass clippings let them dry first. It decreases weight and keeps them from getting hot and killing your plant. If you've ever stuck your hand in a large pile of fresh clippings it feels hot enough to burn ya.
I'm testing out cedar mulch....just a back pack full during my 2mile run....strong smell but will be mixing it with local leaf litter/tall grasses.
Anyone with slug issues should check their local $ store....mine does 12pack for steel wool for $1. Pull the wool apart then loosely wrap in around the stalk and give room for the stalk to grow or just loosen it up when it gets tight. Ordered up 15# of d.e. as well.
haha it's funny you say that because Brown Dirt recommends that in one of his videos too... the old steel mesh around the pot. Then he showed a cup of beer and it was completely full of slugs that crawled in but couldn't get back out... I'm doing both of those plus Sluggo this year just to be safe
Happened several years ago. Definitely a huge loss to the growing community. He helped me a lot on overgrow when I was first starting to grow outdoors. Very knowledgeable person. I could pm him a question and he would answer to the best of his ability. JJscorpio used to be a huge help to people outdoors too. I don't know what happened to him.
If so, I heard he fell off a cliff while repelling down (badass, I know) to a remote garden. They found him a few days later unfortunately.
That's one hell of a way to go out... if you're a real guerrilla you know that'd be an honor to go out while putting your life on the line to get to such a clandestine spot like that. Really shows how dedicated and smart he was out in the bush... you just run into bad luck some days I suppose :/
RIP Silverback, may you be with us this outdoor season...
That is Bad Ass! It would be an honor.
Its a bigger honor to know such a guerilla before passing away.
I hope 1 day another smart guerilla will find, and grow in that spot, and honor Silverback.
I'm just scratching the surface of organics and read this thread. Fifteen or more years ago
I was looking to add some black & golden raspberry & some black berry plants that be trained to grow on vertical trellis & do not have thorns. I searched every nursery within 100 mile radius & I had no luck. All the nurseries had the same few limited choices of common berry plants. Red raspberries were plentiful but the black & golden ones were unobtainable. Someone turned me on to Nourse Berry Farm and they had extensive collection of berry strains/types & ship mail order dry root. They also sell & promote Agrigel. It seamed expensive but I did some research about it and spoke to the manufacturer was able to buy direct. I got a great price but had to buy a large amount. They are geared to supply farmers and resellers. I paid about $30 and got 50lbs from what I remember. I use it in veggie garden & when every I plant a shrub or tree.
Viterra Agri Gel

Viterra® Planta-gel® is a granular, organic, superabsorbent horticultural hydrogel designed to increase the water holding capacity, drainage, and aeration of soils, sand, soilless, and synthetic growing media. Upon sufficient watering of the growing medium, which has received the proper rate of Viterra® Planta-gel® the special hydrogel granules transform themselves into small water-laden gel "chunks." From that point on, the gel chunks will act as "local water reservoirs." Over a period of time, the water from these reservoirs will be gradually released to the soil and plants as needed, or as the media changes its moisture equilibrium. The use of Viterra® Planta-gel® can prevent root damage caused by lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide build up. Viterra® Planta-gel® improves the aeration and drainage of the growing media and helps produce healthier roots.

I have not lost a single plant or tree from drying out once I used this stuff.
I forgot mention I mix 3 heaping tablespoons & water 3/4 full in 5gal bucket. It will gel up in 10 minutes. This may be handy for hard to access Guerrilla sites because you won't have to carry much weight.
______
bump for the 2015 guerillas..i have never used mulch but i will this year after reading this thread..im gonna use the rock method till they get tall enuff to shade the growing media..
