Yes my first year growing the Mountain Gold. Only my 4th season back

I had already bought/shipped my seeds of 2 other Green Mountain offerings.
Green Mountain Grape and Purple Satellite. Had my whole garden planned.
While re-reading the Green Mountain seeds thread I noticed a comment vman made.

It was just an off handed reply made to someone else, buried in a looong thread but it caught my eye.
I had to do quite a dance with my girlfriend about plant counts but I took a chance and it really worked out.

I bought a pack of regs and did the best I could with the situation. So glad I did.
I kept 3 males and 3 females and did a seed increase. Both green and purple expressions.
I also did targeted/tagged pheno specific crossings and that has worked out also after the smoke test.

The green pheno is my favorite morning first puff above many offerings I have available from this season and before.
Purple pheno #2 is a close second.

The Purple Satellite, GM Grape, a Panama Red/Pakistani Landrace, none of them measure up after growing a single pheno of each.
I did make crosses to all of these with Mountain Gold selections.

The Panama Red/Pakistani Landrace was beautiful. But I was disappointed in the smoke.
I hadnt really considered I could get a dud.
Everybody's was green on green and I pulled a purple pheno that so far is disappointing.

I put 3 ounces of the best tops in Grove bags and stashed it to see if maybe some magic happens at 7 months.
Washed the rest.
Hard to imagine something that pretty would be disappointing.

The Mountain Gold to Panama Red / Pakistani cross made some sexy looking tiny dark seeds.

If I ever have the extra room I'd like to try the seeds and see what happens.

But for now I'm leaning into the Mountain Gold and the Oaxacan 79Skull that it has in its breeding.

I do have a pack of the new Oaxacan Gold fem release. It's 50% Oaxacan79Skull
I'll hit a branch with some of the green MG and maybe something special will hook up?

Much darker almost chocolate black in person.

I was probing how long I could run something at my current set up. 42.2N
14 weeks!
That opens up all all sorts of possibilities.

I loved the leaf serrations

It was still green as green could be October 6th.

And then this happened by October 28th

Could have been me.
Could have been the pheno.
Might just needs 7 months curing.
With two past cup winners in its downline I'm disappointed so far.
I'm also disappointed with the Grape and Satellite.
That makes me think it could just be a factor of how on point this Mountain Gold is for me that I'm disappointed when the others don't take me there.
I'll check back on on it around the 4th of July.

Last year I just made due out of desperation and just kind of winged it.

Got them outside and out of the cold basement as soon as I could and raised them up on the porch.

This season I've made some improvements.
Similar plan but with more control.

I could use some help, this is quite an upgrade. I wasn't expecting the AI controller. They threw that in as a freebie. because they were changing over.

Maybe an old dogs can learn new tricks.

I have a good selection of seeds.
These are the all important F2's.
My first real proper pheno hunt.

Now I could use all the most aggressive tricks to keep them small. For a long as possible.

Let's say I start 100.
How do you like to keep them under control?

From my reading I find suggestions to keep the lights tight, full power and 11/13.
For a minimum of 2 weeks for sativas.
So they start showing sex 30 days later.
Does this sound right?

That's where I'm at.

I'm really into this strain and by the sounds of it the phenos you like too,

Did find a really nice Purple Satellite - 1 out of 4 with nice high, they're very leaf fungus resistant here.

You read Upstates thread on keeping sativas small on OG? really very good info on keeping sativas small.

I'm gonna use 35cell tree plugs, let them get a little hungry and rootbound then plant the whole tray, they're almost open at the ends of the plugs. Should keep them small and induce flowering.

And I really want the green.

Plus it's the F2's... everybody say this cross can set me up for years of hunting the F3's. And I have the seeds.

I'll flower out a couple nice incidental purples that pop up but the green is my focus.
I have a couple theories on that I'm working out.

I need to ensure I have enough to continue the green to green cross first.
Punnett squares, ressesives, etc.

I would like to have green multiples of both males and females to choose from to move it forward as a line of it's own best I can.
Hope to time it to have them culled down to around 30 by the time they're a foot tall if possible to keep the peace with my girlfriend.
And cull down to my keepers as soon as possible after that.
All while keeping it contained as possible.

I moved it to a 20 gal in July and it was manageable and still produced a respectable amount of quality buds compared to the size of the plant.

I liked this and plan to try it again.
My better half as it turns out is ok with more plants if they're not huge trees.

Trying to learn all the timing and tricks that others are using to steer their outdoor Northern sativa grows.
Smaller mean more phenos, means more chances to find and cross something special.

Awesome share !! Sounds like you got yourself a great plan and I would love to hear more.
I can predict you will have successful outcomes, the phenos looked stunning with that Xmas tree branching and with such dominant apical top, I seen it on the Mexican Central American variety I gave grown.

You got me excited on the Oaxaca lines and Im gonna put a couple seeds Purple Satellite I received from another brother here. He told me they finish outdoors in his province. And I plan a light dep session so everything under 100 days most likely will finish and the longer flowering will finish under supplemental light.


Good call with putting the light close for height control on seedlings. I opted to flip the Mars hydro tent and the LED are at minimum full spectrum 13/11. Once they peak the system I will flip the tent so they can stretch. I am aiming show sex and I can keep them small until the go Im the ground later on.

I do High stress training on all my plant, that keeps them small until they become untamed… then just gotta tide them down. Messing around with the apical top and auxins, using gravitropism. I manage to tame by restricting shoot mass, small pots. Planting several phenos in 30 gallons living soil best move.

in soil outdoors in the bush but I clone then phenos I like plus the male then put in soil.

If I have the space I can put in ground but pots are versatile to move around and shelter.

This year Im confident enough with the environment Im going to try soil again and work hard to light dep. ultimately I have to select to give priority of soil space to the stand outs. I select on pheno traits ultimately leading me to chase the high.

Today we are dumping organic matter on the soon to beds for vegetables and medicinal herbs. The soil is not the easiest but still I think with the bed I worked on last year will be a great medium for the selected few, I will have to tame them.


Organic veggies coming up

I think I’m starting to understand the soil in the island I live on, and around this particular spot, clay and slightly acidic. We adding a soil base then aged compost to build raised beds on top of clay. Mixing hay to create air pockets and also adding a wide variety of local nutrients.
Seaweed number one soil amendment in my book/garden it’s the base of my green manure compost tea, I use local plants high high mineral content, plus the common bio accumulators like nettle, comfrey, horsetail, dandelions…

The seedlings are gonna stay under lights possibly all April and in May I might start selecting.

My most personal work, this one.

The group, showing traits, phenotypic selection. I’m always looking for healthy resilient individuals adapting to high humidity and rain, cold nights.

On another note; I’m starting to see some positive results on my vermi compost box, I finally started my own and I just sourced the worms basically anywhere around here, grabbed a dozen and gave them a home, it’s over 6 moths into the process and I have added a second batch of food scraps. The juice Im the bottom is what I will be using later.

Thanks for checking stuff out, it’s elbow grease trying to grow outdoors here but it’s fun.

Yeah that Chiang Mai is something else, Im happy to have started with great genetics from Ace. It’s gonna be a interesting progeny.

In terms of real soil test I haven’t done. I’ve done some ph readings here and there, and the old trick of the jar with soil and water to see the composition/layer

I reckon you could probably run them in a tent bro, the purple satellite. It’s a great way to get some Oaxaca in there.

Did some soil tests with growabundant.com a few years ago, was an eye opener and a great learning about how clay behaves when there's enough calcium.

My last guerilla plot was super hard dense clay, previously I would have hauled in 20 bags of nice soil and compost, this time I brought in about 5kg of amendments and a few bags of compost and mulch. I couldn't believe how much lime was going on and that it was needed, by the end of the year with all the root activity, mulch and amendments, it was really loosening up.

Want to get my hands on some of that purple Satellite. Anyone smoke it before?

Grew 4 females in '22, one was outstanding, an Oaxacan leaner, 'effervescent' terps, didn't have much of the cherry as the rest. Really enjoyed the high. Very good Septoria resistance, noteworthy strain.

Pollinated the females with UEL sativaS1 x lemon

Have been growing that cross out for two seasons and I can say it's a winner! In the best phenos it's like it brings the Purple Satellite a whole month earlier, with chunky dense buds and stronger terps. Only have a pic of them in veg, but that's the guerilla plot that got amended. Would like to make the cross again with better selections of each side now I know whats possible.

I think that kind of cross makes for very high yield and quality. Similar to a photo x auto but way less low quality phenos.

Yeah grew the Chiang Mai last year great experience first time running a Thai and outdoor with light dep. it was a lot of work but like I said it’s fun, with the patience and some lights at the end the flower is a great smoke.

The green pheno and the pearl pheno cross

I’m glad I did both Chiang Mai phenos I had, the pearl pheno was wild I liked her for her feral looks. The green pheno was elegant sharp tight node, some what leafy flower but I take it as they come.

The dad had such a branching pattern.

I just finished moving a couple seedlings and was able to check roots, beautiful roots very healthy.

When I see roots like this I know they are happy.

I originally was thinking about growing some Thai.
Chasing a weed memory from 45 years ago when I successfully grew some outside.

Then I got to thinking better of it and decided to chase the Oaxacan and see how long I could push them.
You can't really buy it pure but there's a few crosses out there.

I started reading about all the different favorite Oaxacans, Cryptic, Charlie Garcia, Green Mountain, Ace.

I decided to start with the Mountain Gold after reading a lot of positive reviews.
I'm pretty happy so far with this green pheno of Mountain Gold.
It grew well in my area.
It has a great smell, taste an soaring high like the Thai I wanted to grow but without the aural and mild acid/mushroom like properties.

I looked up the weather in Oaxaca and was surprised how similar it was to mine. After being 5b all my life, they just made an adjustment to us and we are now 6a.

In some of my reading they figure Lebanese immigrants brought the genetics with them to Mexico in the late 1800's. That's what gives it the fatter leaves.

I'm thinking this is where the purple recessives come from in Vman's Oaxacan79Skull.

I asked vermontman and he told me that there never was any purple phenos in the Federation Hawaiian that's the other half of the Mountain Gold cross.
He's said the Oaxacan dominates the cross.

Originally the Oaxacan 79Skull was a green only line.
But Vmans mixed the two in the Mountain Gold so much that they are pretty well embedded.

You can see even this green pheno male expressing a little purple.

Here's a recant of the story about how he first noticed a little purple in a couple of phenos and how he decided to breed towards the purple.

That's some of the information I've collected.
How I got to where I'm at with some of this.
I'm going to keep selecting and crossing the green and see how close I can get back to the original Oaxacan79Skull.

Towards that goal.
I've grabbed a pack of V man's new Oaxacan Gold.
50% the original Oaxacan 79Skull and 50% a new Oaxacan that he felt worthy.

I plant to brush a branch with some select green pheno Mountain Gold and see what interesting crosses come from that.
