I am ASSuming your tent fabric is the same as mine (Same company). I am being very careful not to rip the holes in mine any larger, until I can tear it down, and fix it properly. I noticed on my tent, being actual canvas, that it tears very easily, once it starts. Sounds like you might be in the same boat, except you haven't modified your tent, like I did. I'm sure it voided my warranty, and I wouldn't expect a company to stand behind my Ya-hoo mods.
If your tent ripped just setting it up, and you bought it locally, maybe it was a bad seam, or something? It might be worth a call at least. The damn things cost 5 times what they are worth anyway.
If they say no luck, I agree with you. Stop any more damage from happening, and when you tear it down, get one of those Walmart handheld sewing machine thingys, smoke a bowl, let her rip, and keep your fingers out of it
