Grow #2 - Sour Diesel IBL - 150w HPS

Alright, so I'm running low on bud from my first harvest, so I'm starting my second grow. I ordered some SD IBL beans from Seedbay (I can't wait to order more from there, I'm very satisfied) and germinated them around March 11th.

They were in damp paper towels for 48 hours, and all three that I started popped. I put them into the bottom half of a solo cup and under four 18" floros (overdriven) which gave around 100w~.

About 10 days in, I filled solo cups halfway, and dropped the seedlings on top of the new soil. They took well, and continued to grow. The pH meter from my last grow had been left on and left out to dry, so I had to get a new one. I'm planning on flowering in hydro this time, so I needed a TDS meter as well. This worked out, and I bought the Hanna 98129 Combo pH/TDS meter.

I just got that calibrated today, and tested my tap water, distilled water, and distilled water after adding each nutrient. I used a half gallon of distilled, and put in 1/2 strength of what I plan on feeding them for the rest of their lives.

Price Chopper Distilled Water
PPM: 0-1
pH: 6.3
μS: 0-1

Tap Water

PPM: 91
pH: 7.08
μS: 183

1/2 gallon PCDW + 4.5ml PBPB Soil

PPM: 467
pH: 3.78
μS: 935

1/2 gallon PCDW + 4.5ml PBPB Soil + 1.5ml CalMag Plus

PPM: 610
pH: 3.76
μS: 1218

1/2 gallon PCDW + 4.5ml PBPB Soil + 1.5ml CalMag Plus + pH Up

PPM: 611
pH: 6.45
μS: 1220

μS/1000 = EC (ex. 1218μS = 1.2EC)
PPM @ .5 Conversion Factor

I plan on feeding them 17ml/gallon of PBPB Soil and 6ml/gallon of CalMag Plus throughout flower.

I just transplanted them and gave them their first feeding (The last one in the quote above) today, they went into square 1 gallon containers with my soil mix (6.0 pH, no nutes or additives.)

Hopefully now that I've fed them and they're getting pH adjusted water they'll grow a bit quicker and look a little better. Right now they definitely don't look like 26 day old plants. Hopefully I'll get some more lights installed in the next couple days to help them out.

Alright... here's the pictures.

From left to right: My seeds, and my germination method. (Put into my computer for 48 hours, runs about 80f inside.)

First Plant, two shots of it. Topped at first set of real leaves. Currently ~2" tall with 3 nodes on each shoot.

Second plant, about 2" tall with 4 nodes, tried topping but didn't work, Third plant, been a runt since the beginning, beginning to look better though.

Leaves are yellow and crispy I assume because I never was able to check pH or feed them until they were 3.5 weeks old. I'm not too worried, all the new growth looks great and they'll be fed regularly from now on. Just as a comparison, here was my first grow at 23 days. (Was using 150w CFLs (compared to 100w T8s) and nutes from week 2)

I've got some catching up to do if I want to be where I was last time. I guess it was beginners luck. :fsu:

Nice little grow you have there. Can't wait to see them finish up.

Looking great so far, that's going to turn out to be some amazing smoke. I've heard more than once that because of the inbreeding the SDIBL will be a little slower than most in veg so I don't think you have much to worry about with catching up to your last grow. Should be worth it though, just behind elvis sour d is the best tasting weed I've had, and damn its strong.

Good luck with this one.

Thanks for stopping by everyone!

: Nice to see ya, I never saw your grows before, I'll have to check them out.

PersonalSmoke: Yeah I forgot about the slow veg of the IBLs, I always wondered what people were talking about when they mentioned "hybrid vigor" but I think I might have some idea now.

Creeptic: I had just watered, but literally seconds before I took the picture. They hadn't been watered in I think four or five days before that, I thought they were underwatered, if anything.

sugabear_II: Thanks for stopping in, I love checking out the 150w HPS club and always seeing new stuff from you, good to have you around.

So the plants are looking a lot better, they responded well to their first feeding. They've grown about as much in the past 4 days as they did in the first 20, I was really slacking in the beginning and not caring for the plants much so it's my own fault. Here they are!

Looks like another amazing grow has started............I think I'll pull up a chair.

I started using your perpetual harvest model on this grow. It is working like a charm.

keep up the good work.

Yeah milo_xxx I can't wait to see what I can do with some known genetics. Glad the hear that schedule is working out, I'm hoping I might be able to put it to use in the future.

I might have to move before flowering is over. If that happens, I'll just put them in a box and move them during their dark period. I'm not worried about it, but I'll be sticking to soil this time because of that. I was gonna go hydro, but once I'm moved into my new place I'll have a new cabinet to work with so I'll start all new, from the ground up. The plants are really taking off now, I'll get some updated pictures in the next few days.

Yeah, they were growing extremely slow for the first month. I blame this on using water straight from the tap with no testing (high pH and chlorine) and not feeding them until they were 30 days old. That would do it right? Since those last pictures they've grown a lot, they look amazing, I need to get some pictures up soon.

Alright, here we go. They're looking much healthier than my last grow, if they had been growing this fast since they started they'd probably be 3x this size. A couple spots got burnt by the floro tubes (I know, crazy, huh?.) I had to work for 16 hours and they grew about 3 inches in that time, I got home and they were right on the light. Just a little bit of burnt leaf, no big deal.

I've got to start flowering ASAP or else they'll get too big. They should be flowering by 4/20.

looking good and healthy

be prepared for their flowering stretch... my SDs stretched alot... it was hard to really judge the stretch in my scrog... but n my current grow... they almost tripled in size... i flowered when they were about 6-8 inches and they are now almost 2 feet tall

good luck

u plan on taking some clones and keeping a mother?

u plan on taking some clones and keeping a mother?

Not this time, I'm going to be moving mid-flower as it is and then growing in a whole new cabinet once I move. That cabinet will have separate chambers so I can easily keep mothers. Right now space is at a premium and I just don't have room for them. I'm planning on sticking some screens on the two plants and flowering them in the next couple days, hopefully I'll be able to control the stretch. How long do they stretch for in your experience?

I'm now feeding them full strength, and they're looking fantastic. I still haven't started flowering them, I want to figure out when I'm moving out of this place before I do anything. I'm watering them right now, and if I can find all of my batteries I'll try to get some updated pictures tonight.

Alright, I found the batteries for my camera and got some pictures! It's now day 45, still vegging, their growth seems to have slowed down though.

I'll be scrogging this plant, I'm sure as soon as I flip to 12/12 it'll stretch like crazy and I'll be busy weaving branches in and out of the screen, but I look forward to the challenge. This plant has much more side growth than the next one.

This one was topped extremely early, I think it was between the first and second set of real leaves. I'm doing a combination of topping and LSTing with this one. I just topped it again this morning, so It should end up with 4 main tops. You can see I pulled each stem to one corner. I plan on doing the same thing with the two new stems, so that the plant make a square, following the rim of the container.

Here's the runt. I don't know what the problem is, but I've got space in the cabinet so I figure I'll just let it do it's thing. I didn't think it was going to make it in the beginning but it's doing better now. Nowhere near it's siblings, but it's chugging along.

When I was first LSTing the two main shoots I accidently split the main stem apart where the two shoots come together. I had been worrying about this as I was planning it, but then completely forgot until I looked over and noticed it was split. It's hardened over now, and it didn't seem to slow growth at all.

And finally, here's a group shot, all of them together. I still haven't seen any preflowers on them, I'm looking just about every day.

So I just ordered some Legend's Highend seeds from seedbay. I'm going out tonight to get the money order. I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do when I move. I really want to set up a new cabinet, but I might have to pay rent at two places for a month or two, which would really limit my funds.

I'm gonna check out what kind of cabinets they have at WalMart and Home Depot when I get my money order tonight, so I should make a decision soon.

hey bounty the plants look real nice and healthy!

I saw the c-1 on sale at a homedepot the other day - it's a good size for the 150 - 29" wide x 14.5" deep x 59" tall. You could easily do a 150 plus veg space up top.

also this guy tiny_rabid_bird posted up this cabinet at target for cheap it's only 12" deep though but still a good 150 cab for two plants scrogged.

tiny_rabid_bird said:
In my random searches for cabinets that i often do (i like to fantasize about building the perfect grow-cab for myself, but it's rather infeasible given my current funds), i came across something i thought would be interesting to my fellow US inhabitants, seeing as how Canadian Tire doesn't exist in these parts. I believe that Target has the exact same cab you're using Red.

Decent price at $40USD too. So for those in the US looking to replicate Red's grow to a T, there's your chance.

Yeah that's actually the post that got me thinking. The closest target is 80 miles away, so that kinda kills that deal. I visited Home Depot and the two new Closetmaid cabinets they have as replacements look good.

$90 - 20" deep, 30" wide, 71" tall
$75 - 15" deep, 24" wide, 71" tall

The $75 is a bit smaller than I'd like, but the larger one is just too deep for our apartment, it would stick out too much. I think I might go with the $75 cab soon, after I decide how I want to lay it out.
