Greenhouse Growing Questions

D

DJ_highst_

Hello everyone! Whats up with there being no greenhouse growing forum? They got one for everything else but greenhouse. I think it deserves its own section besides just the Outdoor growing section or the grow room design forum.

I am doing my first greenhouse grow and I got some questions and i am sure there are others that have some to. I was going to use this for questions, products pertaing to greenhouses/coverings and input from others that are growing in a greehouse too. People feel free to cut-in with your own questions and greenhouse grows please.

Some of my questions concerns are: I am living in Cali and we are sopposed to be getting some crazy arctic front from Alaska and get super cold at night. I just filled some 32 gallon garbage cans and 5 gallon buckets with hot water to help keep the temps up. Does anyone have experience with this? Does it really keep temps up all night? How cold is too cold for them outdoors? They are only vegging right now, so no mold/dew issues to worry about and most of the plants are 2-3 feet tall with lots of branching so they are pretty established. Whats the worst that can happen? what should I be watching out for? I am using a light at night to keep them from flowering and I hope that it helps with the temps a bit too. thanks for any input in advanced. peace_highst

* I got some pics of my greenhouse grow, I will get them up latter tonight.

can anyone reconmend a good outdoor MH light? that I could use outdoors or can I use/modify the one I have to work outside with less fear of water/dew damage issues.

I also have a Spring House XL from Flowerhouse that I am using, but that one gets a little colder inside, so I got everything in this one. The were getting so much sun yesterday, for being January.

I also bought my Spring House from OSH for $125.oo. Crazy they show ther price for $225 marked down to $175, what killer deal...... :pointlaug

In answer to your question about temps I have never found them to be a problem. I guess it depends on if the greenhouse it totally sealed or not, if the fan or exhaust is on at night and where exactly you live.

I live in so cal and it never gets very cold here. I usually harvest around Sep-Oct. I then move in my second crop that has been vegging for some weeks. Right now I have Some NYCD, purple urkle, blackberry kush, sour d, romulan...

After these are finished I will grow a small sping crop and then grow my summer crop... it works very well to supply me with enough meds to make the edibles I need. Cali med patient here.

By the way DJ VERY nice grow in the backyard. Did you decide to move into the greenhouse for a particular reason. I just love to see cannabis growing outside where it was meant to be.

take care ps: here are some pics taken today of whats in the greenhouse :yummy:

Fuck ya stinky dope post...let me say welcome too... those are some sweet pics yourself. Great that you are flower outdoors right now, isnt Cali the shit :) I am Cali med patient too, I grow for myself and parents. I prefer to eat too, when I have enough

Oh no dont worry I am still doing the outdoor thing I am just using that for a little cover at night under a floro and just wheel it out side on those carts (dope pick-up for backyard gardening) I am vegging for the summer and I will put this in the ground and get a sping harvest for some and reveg and let the other veg the whole time.

The GH isnt sealed all the way, its not a high tech set-up, only cost $90, bust has window all three sides with mesh netting and velcro seals and roll-up ties, a clear plastic top that can be covered too w/ velcro and steel framing with shelves inside. Its soo cheap, I just had to get it and try and works great, comes with tons of hooks for tools stacks, tie down kit. killer deal.

I am not running a fan, I figures I opening the door and windows is fine for now and it gets the updraft from the fact that its not sealed at the bottom.

I went outside tonight and the buckets of hot water is actually working pretty well so far, temps are around 50 degrees in the tent and its almost 10pm

I went out this morning and they were all covered with frost. Both of the exaust fans I have froze up and stopped working. I am hoping they will thaw out? I just posted in this thread about temps never being a problem :fsu: and then this happens. hahhahha funny shit right there mother nature.

tell me about it bro. It was summer time temps around here for a couple days and then we have some of the coldest night on record for the last 8 years. I am sorry to here about your exhasut system taking a dump on you. Hope you get things figured out. What were you doing to heat the area inside your greehouse? Good luck. peace_highst

I have never done anything about the nightime temps as they have never been a problem. I have just started growing in the greenhouse in the winter months though. I have a summer crop and a spring crop. I have had a few winter crops but this is the only time it has frosted.

I mean I was going to take pics but then I was just too sad. I thought they were dead. They looked like they had a massive overdose of ferts. But they were covered in frost.... If the fans had not have frozen they might have been ok. and then.... I went out about 30 minuits later and they WERE FINE. What a beautiful and hardy plant the cannabis..... THey look like nothing has happened. The sun is on the greenhouse :woohoo:

Now for what I am going to do tonight? I dont know. I have heard of people putting in a trash can full of HOT water to keep the temps up. I really dont want to run a heater.... any suggestions?

Here is a pic of my greenhouse. And a pic of the Mango I grew back a couple years ago....

glad they are doing better now. That is a VERY nice greenhouse. I did the garbage can full of water and it worked OK, but it all depends on how well insulated your GH is the better the insulation the better the hot water can help bring up the temps, it will also affect humidity too. Your grow looks great keep up the good work.

It is funny how no one but the two California boys are posting in the Outdoor Greenhouse thread since its the dead of winter. We are the lucky few who can still do outdoor in the winter. peace_highst

Charley's Greenhouse Checklist

Here is a decision guideline to help you plan your greenhouse. If you have questions about any aspect of the greenhouse, please call, fax or e-mail us. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff is waiting to help.

Framework

__ Aluminum - wood if beautiful, but our aluminum frames are longer lasting and maintenance-free.
__ Painted Aluminum - best appearance, looks new for many years.

Glazing

__ Tempered safety glass
__ TwinWall or Opal
__ TripleWall
__ Glass walls, TwinWall or Opal roof

Foundation

__ Pressure treated timbers (up to 200 sq. ft greenhouse)
__ Concrete/block base wall
__ Concrete slab/tile

Note: Outside dimensions of greenhouse foundation are given under "Actual Sizes" on the price charts.

Floor

If you have not poured a concrete slab, you will need a walkway down the middle of your greenhouse. First, lay down landscape fabric (#2380) over the entire floor. For an aisle of bricks: frame the walkway with treated 2 x 4 lumber, lay down 2" of crushed rock, then 1" of sand, and set the bricks with 3/8" spacing. A final touch might be to plant lemon thyme between the bricks! Finish the remainder of the floor with 2" of pea gravel.

__ Aisle pavers/bricks, Pea gravel under benches
__ All pavers - provides good drainage
__ Concrete slab/tile - not too smooth or it gets slippery. Provide for drainage.

Accessories

__ Benches
__ Shading
__ Heating
__ Air Circulation
__ Misting System

I was taking a look at your gallery. I am so impressed with the size of your garden. I must assume you live in a area with laws that let you grow outside? In my town it's in a locked greenhouse/structure.

I long for the day when I can just put them outside in the sun.

Do you know what made me want a greenhouse. Riverlady. She was on Overgrow with a lot of other fine folks. She started a Greenhouse thread. It was the longest thread I have ever seen. Many many people just popping in to say goodmorning. Backcountry and spacemanspiff you still doing GH's.

Anybody out there with pics let's see em. You have plans. well lets hear them. Spring is around the corner.

thanks Stinky

I wasnt registered at OG, I dont remember that thead, but I wish I had.

I am thinking about putting my 400MH out there, but not sure what the best way to protect the ballast, cords etc. I was thinking of using an old cooler to place it in run the cord out of the water spout where the ice water drains. Is there anyone who can give me some feedback. peace_highst

wow, i would LOVE to have a greenhouse like that STinky. Has anyone here every experimented with greenhouses that use No electricity, nor solar anything. I want to build a greenhouse that doesnt get opened very often but still gets fresh air, and stays warm.... ill post a pic of what i think i could make, if yall want to contribute some ideas. pce

It will need to stay warm in probably 35 degree nights, and 50 degree days, also reason for this is for one hell of a spring start in the woods, watering will not be an issue.pce

Thanks outdoor grower. It is real easy to build and very inexpensive also. I do have to change the plastic once a year due to it spliting. I want to get another material to cover the GH

Yep FFB Maybe I should not have said anything..... The plants looked ok later in the day but they have just stopped growing. I mean all the white hairs frooze and turned orange and no new growth yet.

I went out today to just pull all of them... I pulled one and it had ALOT of new white roots.....

I left the rest in hopes they will start to grow new hairs, if not well just start again....

Hey paddis thanks for stopping by dj's greenhouse thread...

It is cold here in cali but its possible to grow and harvest in the winter months. This is the first time I have dealt with such low temps though.. I will just wait a few weeks and see how they are doing.

I have a few other trees plants around our property that have died due to the frost we had a few days ago...

Hey Outdoor grower I started my greenhouse without any electricity. It sure was hot without a fan though... I just run a heavy duty cord out to the GH for the two fans I run...intake and exhaust. Temps usually run between 45@ night and 85 daytime. I have a space all around the bottom for ventilation...
