So does anyone have experience with heat cable? I'm wondering if it would work like a radiant floor heating and raise the ambient temperature of the greenhouse? During the spring I could use a few degrees extra?

I used to work in a greenhouse that used hot water pumped through tubes below the floor. They never poured concrete or anything, which might of been more effective but they put down about a foot of blue stone and the pipes were in that. So the blue stone held the heat and slowly radiated it into the house. Hope thats understandable.

yes radiant heat works well but how do you want to generate it electrically or how far is a furnace from your green house. can you add another zone.my house has a thermostat tht controls the upstairs and one down there is room on my furnace to add another zone for instance i could put in a heat exchanger if i had a pool .It all depends on how you want to do it and how much is in your budget.Adding a piece of heat is really nice in your greenhouse especially in the winter .theres plenty of propane heaters/blowers tht can be added fairly inexpensivly with high btu output. If you got some extra doe put in a nice propane wood stove easy to vent cranks out heat makes a nice winter hangout in the process of starting mine ordering my kit from canada ill post some pics in the next couple of months when it arrives.

Greetings All,
I'm in SoCal and have always done indoor. I'm thinking about putting a round of girls out in a plastic house. I guess my question is timing. I have no fear of frost under the plastic so I guess the biggest factor is hours of daylight. I'm afraid if I took babies from my nursery where they get 18 hours of light and put them outside now, that they will just begin to flower with out getting big.

Any thoughts about when best to move babies from an 18 hour lighted nursery to an all natural lit greenhouse much appreciated.

Peace

If u have a green house(small or large) don't u think LEO in a helicopter would be attracted to it and try to see what's growing inside? What's ur opinion on this? Thanks :)

You could put them out now and if you dont want them to flower add a little CFL or incandecent light to extend the light hours a bit early in the evening each night. The dont need much light, just enough to trick them to thinking the days are longer. You could keep them on all night or just long enough to match the 18 hours they were getting before.

next time you walk your dog or drive around your block look to see how many people have sheds, sunrooms, greenhouse, shadding, arbor or other backyard sturcture on the side of their house. A lot of people have something, so I dont think they will raise as much alarm as you may think. They arent going to check every little backyard building.

I'm a little sketch on putting lights out in the GH. I've had it in my yard for awhile without a shred of interest from LEO but lighting at night makes me uncomfortable. Kinda like they say with investing...you gotta go with what you can be comfortable with.

That being said-
Do you think I could put them out in july or august when I'm getting 15 hours + / - of daylight ? The days would still be getting longer so my hope is that the plant would veg for a couple of months and then start flowering once the days start shortening. If the girls need to go into late November I don't see a prob since frost isn't an issue.

Peace & Much Thanks

You dont need to leave the lights on for long. If you just interupt the night cycle in the middle with a few minutes of light, maybe even less you could probably delay flowering in most varieties.

Allright a great idea for a thread! So here is my issue- for 2 summers now I've placed a couple girls out in my greenhouse and I was very pleased with they way they took off. However, both summers just a week before harvest some bastard ripped my plant off from my greenhouse doing damage to the door. Anyone have a solution for better security? I've even considered electricfying the metal frame. I have disabled the MV security light because I don't want hermies.

Those bastards are everywhere. Its unbelieveable how many people sit around wait to steal a plant. Sorry to hear that and hope things go better for ya.

Couple of suggestions for you, definately camp your grow those last couple weeks...I actually camp the last month of mine to run off scoundrels.

Install motion sensors by your greenhouse, not terribly expensive, and you can go several ways. They make motion sensors that come with beepers. These beepers work like 2 miles from the sensor, and that thing will beep you if anything moves by your greenhouse.

Or do as a freind of mine, and put motion sensors on his sprinkler system to run off the unwanted. This is great for animals.

Also you can get those wildlife nightvision motion cameras, that some even take video, and post it where it can get some good pics. You can pick a pretty decent one up for like 400 bucks at cabellas catalogue.

Course we all know Dogs work wonders.

Not sure what greenhouse material your using, but if its breakinable(nice word huh? lol), you can line the outside of your greenhouuse with hardware cloth(its that metal net fencing like stuff), that can make sure that anyone trying to get in that way has to have wire cutters with them and take more time to get in. And then do like you said and electrify that thing.lol

One of my partners a few years back had an electric fence, his was nice in that he could set the intensity. That might be a good option.

Anyways man, good luck next year

peace :)

Hi grow tech, sorry to lag on a reply. you could put them up mid summer like that, but you dont need to wait til July or August to avoid them budding early. As long as you wait till about mid-May you should be fine, unless you like to keep them a little smller for security, then July would be perfect. If they have a cover, then I think frost shouldnt be an issue, unlesss it gets perspiration on the leaves from temp fluctuation.

Good luck bro. Peace_highst

Very cool thread. I'm an indoor grower with outdoor dreams.

Is there any way to block light out of a greenhouse? If you could completely put the greenhouse into darkness, then you could have fast turnover like indoor grows.

I heard Bill Gates' house's windows can be switched from clear to opaque, from a current being passed through the glass panes. Has anyone used that principle to make a "smart greenhouse". :chin:

had one of my 2 superskunks pinched from the greenhouse last year :-( had to laugh tho as I'd been tying them back to the greenhouse frame so all the best bits got ripped off and where on the floor when i went out in the morning, this year I'll be waiting with me friendly pick axe handle to say hi to any night time intruders :)

Alright well I set up this temporary " greenhouse" if you can call it that. It's bassicaly 2 plastic walls with a plastic top and I want to make sure it's gonna work the way I have it set up or if some improvements need to be made?

Any help would me much appreciated.

There seem to be a few unanswered question on here so i'll see if i can fit in!!

does opaque polycarb block out more light than the clear?
Yes it does, the first thing you want to know when getting a greenhouse covering material is its light transmission properties!! Mean how much light actually passes threw the material. For MJ more is better but i've seen 50%light transmission produce some monster buds.

where do I go to get plans to build a GH
Here is a link with complete plan and material list, it can be constructed without much tools or construction knowledge. http://www.pvcplans.com/pvc-greenhouse.htm

Looks good Midtown i'd suggest you raise the middle a few inches so if you do have a heavy shower of rain it does catch water on the top and come crashing down. A peice of wood or pipe with a pop bottle on the top will work just fine.
